SELECTMEN’S MEETING
October 27, 2010
Chairman McCarthy opened the meeting at 6pm. In attendance were Chairman Trisha J. McCarthy, Selectman Raymond D Thayer and Selectman Robert S. Donovan, Jr. Minutes were transcribed and typed by Office Manager Mary Winglass. The meeting was videotaped.
Chairman McCarthy explained that State Representatives Mary Allen and Kim Casey have been invited to explain some of the legislative decisions, issues and bills that are taking place at the State House and to explain the future of state education funding.
Chairman McCarthy introduced State Representative Mary Allen. State Representative Kim Casey arrived at approximately 6:25pm.
Both State Representative Mary Allen and Kim Casey gave an overview of the State Education Aid as defined in SB 539. Rep. Allen did not vote in favor of the education funding plan; Kim Casey voted in favor and explained her reasons to the public and to the Selectmen. The Town of Newton stands to lose over $80,000 in 2011 based upon the current funding formula. The State will continue discussing the state education funding formula again in January 2011; starting July 1st is when the new formula takes full effect.
The meeting ended at approximately 8pm.
