MEETING AGENDA
I. Call To Order:
Chairman Dupuis called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. In attendance were Chairman Pauline Dupuis, Secretary Susan DiMercurio, , Members—Matt Maskrat and Thomas Hansen and Jennifer Klopotoski, Selectmen Liaison Ray Thayer. Guest attendee: Heather Borowy…future member. Minutes were transcribed and typed by Secretary DiMercurio
Minutes were read from past meeting.
Chairman Pauline Dupuis motioned to accept the Recreation Minutes dated July 13, 2011 as written. Seconded by Jennifer Klopotoski. Vote: Unanimous
October Trip:
Chairman Dupuis outlined her suggestion for an October Senior Trip. She is proposing a trip to the Spirit of Boston and having it be specially priced for Newton Seniors using the balance of the budget from the warrant article. She feels that this will be a great opportunity for all Newton Seniors (even on limited incomes) to be able to attend a trip. We have set a deadline (Sept 20th) for all Newton Seniors to register, then will open to all non-residents on a first come, first serve basis. Following approval from the Board of Selectmen, Secretary DiMercurio will post flyers around town, and will post an article in the Carriage Towne News.
Motion made by Susan DiMercurio to accept this trip for October 19, 2011 to the Spirit of Boston as suggested by Chairman Dupuis. Seconded by Tom Hansen. Vote: Unanimous Motion passed
By-Laws reviewed:
This has been tabled until the next meeting due to time constraints and other more pressing items to disucuss
“Fun Day for Newton Children” Ideas:
Recreation has been informed that we don’t need to hold the fall festival but do need to hold events for the children of Newton. An idea for a “MOVIE NIGHT” has been suggested by Jennifer Klopotoski. She is suggesting having a “Drive-In” Style movie night with a “G” rated film, popcorn, and soda. She has contacted Grand Rental and has received quotes on how much it would cost to rent all equipment necessary for running this event (Grand Rental has a 70 x70 screen and we are hoping to find a bigger one) . Our suggested date for this event will be August 25th and will be presenting this idea to the Board of Selectmen at their next public meeting.
Motion made by Chairman Dupuis to accept the “Drive-In” Movie Night as an event for the children providing we can find a larger screen. Seconded by Susan DiMercurio Vote: Unanimous Motion Passed
Recreation is also in the process of obtaining other ideas (from towns people) for other ideas. Both Jennifer and Chairman Dupuis have ideas such as a “Kereoke Night” or a “Singing/Dancing Contest”.
Motion made by Tom Hansen to table this issue until August 10 Meeting. Seconded by Jennifer Klopotoski Vote: Unanimous Motion Passed
J. Klopotoski to post on the “Swap” facebook page asking for additional children ideas. She will give us her results at the August 10, 2011 meeting. Note: She is noting that she is getting input from parents that they would like a “Summer Program” for their kids
Maintenance Contract:
Motion made by Jennifer Klopotoski to table this issue until the August 10, 2011 Meeting. Seconded by Chairman Dupuis. Vote: Unanimous Motion Passed
Recreation Budget Discussion:
Motion made by Jennifer Klopotoski to table this issue until the August 10, 2011 Meeting. Seconded by Chairman Dupuis. Vote: Unanimous Motion passed.
Greenie Park:
At the last meeting, it was determined by the Recreation Commission that our Road Agent, Mike Privea, would be contacted to see if his crew could do some of the repairs to the Skateboard Park that are not able to be done by T & M Properties. We would like to have him (Mike) meet with Tim Hajjar from T & M. Secretary DiMercurio to speak with Office Manger, Mary Winglass, or Town Administrator, Nancy Wrigley, regarding this and to see if this can be done and have a time set up for the two men to meet.
Selectmen Thayer cleaned up some other debris that was around the Park. Selectmen Thayer also told Recreation that the town’s custodian is in the process of repairing the picnic tables at the beach and Secretary DiMercurio will ask Town Administrator, Nancy Wrigley, to have him move one of the repaired tables to the skate park for seating.
Recreation to get a price for a sign to be put up at the park outlining the parks rules and regulations. Secretary DiMercurio to contact Signs Etc for this quote. She will bring her findings to the Recreation Commission at the next meeting in August.
Town Beach Issues:
Amendment to the past meeting minutes from July 13, 2011—It was noted that the Fire Chief’s name was Bill Baker. This is an error; it should be Bill Ingalls.
Selectmen Thayer has informed the Recreation Commission that messages have been coming in about the removal of the dock (raft) at the town beach. The raft was removed after discussion about the safety of it in the water. At the last Recreation meeting, we asked that the Fire Chief go down and give us his input about the safety of the dock. He has come back to us with a suggestion on how to safely moor this (and we are waiting for a report from him for review) but opinion about it’s safety still out-ways putting it back in the water. The Recreation Commission feels that the water level is not deep enough and that we should be following the Red Cross Guide lines. Also there are broken rungs on the ladder as well as a broken lock on the mooring.
Two Part Motion made by Tom Hansen: 1: to keep the raft out for the rest of the season and to find out the safety depth of the water by the American Red Cross and 2: to have Swim Coordinator, Lisa Babcock, keep a record of the water’s depth where the raft sits to see if it goes down and get in writing the American Red Cross Specifications for having a raft at a public beach. Seconded by Jennifer Klopotoski. Vote: 4 Yes 1 No Motion Passes.
Jennifer Klopotoski discussed the fact that we as a board did not know about the residents issues with the raft until we got to the meeting. It was suggested that if Office Manager, Mary Winglass, could contact Secretary DiMercurio via email with any notices of recreation issues like the above, she could then send out notification to the other board members so we are made aware of these issues before a meeting, as well as sending out notice to other residents via cable and website.
