Meeting Minutes
June 23, 2010


1. Call to Order:  The meeting was called to order at 7:20 pm. The following members were in attendance: Deb Holden, Rick Bailey, Ray Thayer, BOS ex officio, and Lisa Babcock.  Minutes were transcribed by Lisa Babcock.

Also in attendance: Dave Marden and Jon Holden, Swim Director.

2. Town Beach:

Motion by Deb Holden to pay David Marden Landscaping $150.00 for removal of shrubs at town beach to be paid out of Town Beach Grounds Maintenance. Second by Thayer. Motion carried unanimously.

Mr. Marden reviewed his quote to install equipment at the Beach. The charges are as follows $75 to dig holes for the bike rack and bulletin board, $475 to install the bike rack, bench, bulletin board and 3 picnic tables and to move one grill, and $300 to rake the beach and spread sand. Recreation will supply cement, sand, etc. for installation.

Because these items are for the installation of capital equipment, they will be paid for out of checking, except for the raking and sand spreading which is grounds maintenance.

Motion by Ms. Holden to spend up to $850 for the projects as listed on estimate # 81, dated 6/22/10 submitted by David W. Marden Landscape Maintenance, to be paid out of the Recreation Checking account except that the raking of the beach ($300) to be paid out of town beach grounds maintenance. Second by Thayer. Motion carried unanimously.

Mr. Marden will meet with Ms. Holden at 8:00 am at the beach, weather permitting.

3. Swim Program/Life Guards: Swim Director Jon Holden updated the commission on the swim program.

There are 17 students. Mr. Holden will make copies of the checks and bring them to the selectmen's office.

The commission discussed purchasing uniforms for the new guards. Mr. Holden suggested the following
1 men's short (large, blue) $19.95
1 women's guard bathing suit (red, med) $47.50.
5 whistles ($4.00)
5 lanyards ($4.00)

Motion by Holden to spend up to $100 for guard uniforms and shipping as noted to be paid out of town beach supplies. Second by Thayer. Motion carried unanimously.

The secretary informed the commission that there would be a selectmen's meeting at 4:30 pm on June 24 to review the swim contracts.

Mr. Holden said he would like to advertise for guards to pick up weekend shifts and occasional weekday shifts.

Ms. Holden moved to pay $25 for an advertisement on Mass Craigslist to be paid out of Town Beach advertising. Second by Bailey. Motion carried unanimously.

Ms. Holden moved to spend up to $1,600 out of recreation checking to purchase a picnic table for the town beach (including shipping). Second by Bailey. Motion carried unanimously.

4. Summer Programs:

Bailey said he is waiting to hear from the school regarding the tennis courts but that everything for the tennis program will be the same as last year.

Matt Muskrat had done some research and e-mailed the commission regarding golf lessons, surf lessons and a soccer program.

Bailey will submit an ad to the Carriage Town News for tennis, golf, surfing, Water Country tickets and arts and crafts.

Ms. Holden suggested using the swim aids (2) to run the arts and crafts program which will start in July. The members agreed.

5. Senior Programs:

Jenny King from Packer Meadows had requested assistance with the July 4th party.  Thayer said he would attend.

Thayer moved to spend up to $150 out of senior programs for the July 4th party. Second by Bailey. Motion carried unanimously.

6. Chairperson:

Motion by Thayer to nominate Deb Holden as chairperson. Second by Bailey. Motion carried unanimously.

7. Credit card:

Motion by Bailey to send a memo to the BOS to transfer the recreation credit card to Deb Holden and increase the limit to $2,000.  Second by Thayer. Motion carried unanimously.

8. Adjourn:

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 pm.
