Newton Recreation Commission
Minutes
April 22, 2009

1. Call to order:
Chairman Rick Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm with the following members present: Deb Holden and Bob Donovan, BOS ex officio. Minutes were recorded and transcribed by secretary/alternate, Lisa Babcock.

Bailey appointed Alternate Lisa Babcock to stand in for the evening.

2. Greenie Park Grounds Maintenance:
David Marden of David W. Marden Landscape Maintenance was in attendance to discuss Grounds Maintenance for Greenie Park.  Mr. Marden said he would mow the fields on Thursday, April 30.  He will contact several Commission members to view the work.

3. Chemical Toilets:
The Commission reviewed pricing for chemical toilets at Greenie Park and the Town Beach.  Pete's Sewer Service charges $125/month for a handicap unit and Triangle charges $98.20/month.

Holden moved to have Triangle supply handicap-size chemical toilets for Greenie Park and the Town Beach at $98.20/month. Second by Bailey. Motion carried unanimously.

The secretary will contact Triangle for May delivery for Greenie Park and June for the Town Beach.

4. April Vacation Activity:
Holden informed the Commission that the April Vacation activity is at Leo's Super Bowl. The package she negotiated includes: 1 string of bowling, shoes, and 10 arcade tokens for $5.50 per person.  There is also $1 off a pizza at Sal's.

5. Senior Programs:
Bailey asked the secretary to get some contact info for Roger Clark, chairman of the Kingston Recreation Commission so that we can begin working together on some programs for seniors.

Holden made the following program suggestions: flower show, Fuller Gardens in Rye, Squam Lake Natural Science Center, Mount Washington Boat ride, and Duck Tours. She also suggested having 4 events per year and budgeting $1,250 for each trip.

6. Newsletter:
The Spring Newsletter is complete.  Babcock will print copies for the public meeting and also distribute around town after the bowling flyers can be removed. Some newsletters will also be put downstairs at the town hall and it will be sent to the webmaster for the web site.

7. Summer schedule:
Last year's summer schedule will be distributed to all members for their review.  Holden reviewed the items on last year's schedule:
  • Captain's Corner Mini Golf – had low turnout but it was a rainy day and there was little advertisement. There is also a seafood restaurant and ice cream place right near there, a package deal might be arranged.
  • Tennis Lessons – Rick to supply pricing and other information.
  • Karate – contact Dean Mace to see if he wants to put a deal together. This would be a new program.
  • Apple Hill Golf lessons – this was a popular program.  Holden will find out if there is a 2nd level for the kids that took lessons last year.  Bailey said instructions for sign-up need to be clarified as there was some confusion last year.
  • Arts & Crafts – program was run on Thursdays for 6 weeks – good turnout.
  • Cinema 95 – Holden has been unable to reach them but does want to continue trying since it was a popular event.
  • Beach Party – popular event.
  • Exeter Ice House – this was not a popular event, no one attended.  Perhaps there was not enough advertisement.
  • Mad Science – discussion about having them do a performance at the Beach Party and at the Fall Fair.
  • Leo's Bowling – poor attendance, again could be lack of advertisement.
  • Jurasic Mini-Golf – not sure of attendance.
  • Water Country tickets – Babcock will find out how many are left and how many to order.
  • Other ideas: Amesbury Sports Park, Coco Keys water park, surf lessons, family hiking trip.
8. Town Beach:
Part of the Campground's wooden fence has fallen down.

The commission discussed the carry in/out policy for trash. Holden said she thought there should be trash barrels there, but nicer ones. Bailey said the road crew can be asked to empty them.

9. NBSA
Bob Morton arrived at 8:00 pm.  He gave an update on park cleanup day.  He said that the lawn was de-thatched, the infields were cleaned up and the batting cages were put back up.  He said they may use the tent for pictures on opening day – April 25th.

He also handed out a request for support for Babe Ruth.  This was tabled to the next meeting.

10. Fairpoint Movie Event:
Recreation will coordinate the event with Fairpoint. Babcock will send an e-mail to Fairpoint expressing interest and to the schools to mention that we might want to use the field near the middle school for the event.
11. Skate Park
The commission reviewed a police report concerning an injury at the skate park.

12. Adjourn:
Bailey called the meeting adjourned at 9:33 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Lisa Babcock, Secretary
Newton Recreation Commission
