April 9, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Newton Town Hall
Call to order
Chairman Rick Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm with the following members present: Rick Bailey and Gary Nelson and alternates Nancy Slombo and Deb Holden. Minutes were recorded and transcribed by secretary, Lisa Babcock.
Bailey appointed alternates Slombo and Holden for the evening.
Summer Programs
Holden informed the Commission that the last day of school is scheduled to be June 18th. Slombo suggested having swim registration on 6/19 & 6/20 and starting the swim program on 6/23/08 running for 5 weeks.
The Commission will review the swim program application at the next meeting. Once it is updated, it should be made available on the web.
Holden informed the Commission that the performer doing the Good Old Days Song and Hat Show can do 2 shows on the same day (one at Packer Meadow and one at another location). However she suggested having the performer do 1 show at Packer Meadow to see how it is received then book the second show for the Fall Fair or another night.
She asked about getting a large coffee pot for the event, Nelson said he had one that she could borrow.
Holden also mentioned some other ideas for summer programs including: mini golf, ice skating, bowling, movies (Amesbury or Exeter), and a program called “Mad Science” from Atkinson. She also suggested a summer kick-off party.
Bailey suggested putting a volleyball net at the Town Beach. Nelson will price some posts. Slombo will look into getting sand to level the area.
Holden said she would also like to have an arts and crafts program at the beach over the summer. Slombo said they used to do that, the canopy tent was put up and left up. Bailey suggested contacting the Gale Library to see if they knew someone to run the program, Recreation could sponsor it.
A fishing derby was also suggested, but there is no convenient place to fish on the pond. It was suggested that Recreation try to work with CPF&GC to have an ice fishing derby in 2009 with Recreation and CPF&GC co-sponsoring the event.
Appointment
Slombo moved to appoint Deb Holden as a regular member of the Recreation Commission with her term ending in 2011 taking the spot vacated by Janice Amero. Second by Bailey. Motion carried unanimously.
Calendar
Bailey asked the secretary to update the calendar and have it posted on the web site.
Adjorn
The secretary had to leave at 9:00 pm and the meeting was adjorned.
Respectfully Submitted,
Lisa Babcock,
Secretary
