Bill Landry called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.

Secretary’s Report – Mary Riordan
Mary Marshall made a motion to accept the minutes of August 11, 2008. John Meserve seconded the motion.  The motion passed on a unanimous vote.

Treasurer’s Report – Bill Landry
Marilyn Landry made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report.  Myrtle Rogers seconded the motion.  The motion passed on a unanimous vote.

Old Business:
Update on transfer of Hayford Carriage to NHS – Bill Landry sent a letter to the Selectmen asking that the transfer ownership of the carriage to the Society or transfer it on a bill of sale of $1.  Nancy Wrigley told Bill it will be put on the Selectman’s Agenda.
Update on repair of floor in Primary School – Bill Landry will meet with Rob Hayes to find out how to remove the floor.  Barbara & Bill Gallant expressed interest in the flooring we’ll be removing.  Bill Landry will let them know that we’ll be cutting it into small pieces.

Report on Yard Sale / Craft Fair Corn Roast – Mary Marshall reported it went as well as could be expected with the weather as it was.  We learned not to mix a Flea Market and a Craft Fair.  The revenue from the Society’s table sale of items was $228.  Ed and Susan Babb made a donation of $50.  The total revenue from the event was $278.  Irene Nally reported that Albert & Marnie Butland of Butland Woodburning donated a wooden plaque of the Old Man in the Mountain and some bird feeders to raffle off.  Bill Landry will send a letter of appreciation to Mr. Babb and Butland Woodburning.

Update on October 18th Wine & Cheese Social –Bill Landry submitted an application to sell tickets at the Town Clerk’s office to the Selectman.  It was approved at the Selectman’s meeting last week.  John Meserve reported the press release went out today to 8 publications.  He will have tickets at the Bank this week.  Bill Landry will get tickets to the Town Clerk and the Library.  The posters will be put up around town in the next couple of weeks.  Bill Landry will send Andy Morse a file to be put on the local Cable channel.  It has also been submitted as a Public Service Announcement to a couple of radio stations.  Bill Landry will put the announcement on the Town Hall board.

New Business:
Participation in Newton Fall Fair Day Sept. 27th – 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM – Bill Landry received a note from Rick Baily, Chairman of the Recreation Commission, asking if we wanted to participate this year.   There was discussion of who would be available that day.  Kathy Meserve made a motion we do not participate in the Fall Fair Day this year.  Marilyn Landry seconded the motion.  The motion passed on a unanimous vote.

Table at town hall on Election Day Tues. 9/9 – Myrtle Rogers stated she would be at the town hall on Election Day with several scrapbooks.  Bill Landry gave her some membership forms to have at the table.  Marilyn Landry suggested we have more on display at the General election on November 4th.


Correspondence:
Kevin Gardener re: Talk on “Building New England Stone Walls” – Bill Landry received letter from author Kevin Gardener indicating he is available for speaking engagements.  There was discussion on whether there would be public interest in this topic.  John Meserve suggested we have a questionnaire to hand out at the Wine & Cheese Social and the General election to find out what topics people would be interested in.  Karen O’Malley suggested we include a question on what day of the week would be best for these events.  Bill Landry, John & Kathy Meserve, and Karen O’Malley will work on the questionnaire.  Bill Landry will send Mr. Gardener a letter indicating at this time we do not have interest in this topic but we will keep is his information for future reference.  Kathy Meserve suggested that if there is a topic the members are interested in, we should consider scheduling a speaker even if we’re not sure there would be general public interest.  She suggested a genealogy event might have general interest.
Hayford family visit – Bill Landry received an email that David Hayford’s 2 sisters would be in the area on October 4th.  Bill will meet with them and take them around town.   

Other:
Insect infestation of the Marshall House – Cheryl Saunders will check with Nancy Wrigley to find out which exterminator treated the Town Hall.  Bill Landry will then see about getting an estimate on treating the Marshall House.

Bill Landry welcomed new members, Barbara DiBartolomeo and Karen O’Malley.

John Meserve made a motion to change the next meeting to Tuesday October 14, 2008 at the Merrimack Bank.  Bill Landry seconded the motion.  The motion passed on a unanimous vote.

Marilyn Landry made a motion to adjourn.  Kathy Meserve seconded the motion.  The motion passed on a unanimous vote.  Bill Landry adjourned the meeting at 7:50PM.
