FIRE STATION
BUILDING COMMITTEE MEETING (FSBC)
July 20, 2015
In attendance, in alphabetical order: Fire Chief John Alcaidinho, Joe Lingel, Vice Chairman Dennis Moran, Mike Pivero, Jim Ryan and Jim White. Also attending were Lisa Gonyer and Jim Doggett. Jim Holland, Trisha McCarthy and Chairman Dale Putnam were excused. Secretary Barbara White transcribed the minutes.
For this meeting, the members met at 8 Merrimac Road 7:00 pm for a tour of the existing building on site to discuss possible alterations for conversion to a working Fire Station. Board members decided they would like to see the existing building to make a better determination of what could be done.
In going forward, it is still the contention of the membership it makes more sense to reconfigure this Merrimac Road building for use than put any more monies into the existing fire house.
As the Fire Chief was going to be delayed, Mr. Ryan led the group through the building and pointed out some of possible changes that had been looked at for the inside to make it workable in the most economical way.
It was noted that the 2-bay space at the end of the building (on the right facing) was leased for a period of one year.
When Chief Alcaidinho arrived, he explained he had met with the Building Inspector who pointed out anticipated changes that would need to happen to make the space useable.
Some of the items discussed were:
- the wiring throughout would need to be gutted out and replaced;
- the raised floor portion currently present would need to be removed;
- walls between areas used for storage of equipment / vehicles and use by people would need to be brought up to code (fire-proofed);
- the ceiling would be dropped;
- the current aged heating system would need to be replaced as it is not up to code;
- the septic system would need to be checked out and maybe replaced;
- a portion of the first bay would be converted for use as a meeting room and the overhead doors removed and replaced by a wall with a walk-in door and windows.
- there was some question on whether or not it would need to be sprinkled (not sure yet).
There was some discussion on costs, but no one really had an accurate idea of what that number could be. Mr. Pivero noted if the Chief could provide him a rough sketch of a proposed configuration, he could provide a rough budget number.
