Chair’s Report
On Saturday, March 12, Town Meeting voted funds to allow the library to be open from 1:00 – 5:00 pm on thirty Sundays between Columbus Day and Memorial, staffed with a librarian, five associates and a custodian. Since the meeting, it has been suggested that the library should be open from September to May, as in the past, but the funds voted were sufficient for thirty Sundays only.
Director’s Report
Ms. Winquist reported that because of some closures of the library due to snow this winter, the staff is a little behind in its work on the long range plan. She has started the process with the union of scheduling Sundays. She will do an article for the Clipper now that Town Meeting is over.
Department Reports
Reports of the Children’s, Circulation, Reference and Technical Services Department were distributed. It was noted that some of the decrease in the circulation statistics could be due to the cut backs in programming caused by budget reductions.
Friends Report
Ms. Lougee read a letter from the President of the Friends of the Duxbury Free Library. The Friends have donated $4,000 to the library for materials, in addition to the large number of Best Friends Books that they have donated. They will provide for funding the children’s summer reading program and the young adult video contest this summer. They have also leased a copier for staff use. The Friends are planning an annual appeal in the spring, have increased membership to more than 400 and will raise additional funds through participation in the annual house tour on May 3. On March 30, Ms. Jankowski will lead a discussion of Jody Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper for the Friends book club.
Long Range Planning Update
Mr. Meier reported that the staff is working on writing objectives. He will be attending the next Supervisors Meeting where goals and objectives will be discussed. The Trustees will then consider whether resources need to be redirected.
Acknowledgment of Peg Lougee’s Service
Mr. Flynn, on behalf of the trustees, thanked Ms. Lougee for her service to the library. Ms. Lougee looked back on her six years on the Board and said that she would continue to support the library.
Moved by Mr. Hill, seconded by Ms. Lougee, to adjourn at 8:32 am.
