Intersection of Kollar/Sharps Mill September 12, 2012
& Luchon Roads 7:30 A.M.
First Selectman Mailhos called the meeting to order at 7:30 A.M. with the following in attendance: Selectmen Littell & Blessington, Town Engineer, Karl Acimovic; Public Works Director, Lynn Nicholls; Mark & Shari Masinda and Maureen Gantick.
A. Review of Kollar/ Luchon / Sharps Mill Road – proposed three way stop sign
Mr. Masinda opened the discussion. The intersection itself with the turns is dangerous, but the more dangerous part of the intersection is the traffic flow coming around the corner, which is tight to the bank. He stated two days after the last regular BOS meeting; he was on his motorcycle and was almost hit by a car that cut in coming down the road on the opposite direction. As people come down around the corner (up and down the hill) they come up on his front lawn or end up in the brook. He added that you can’t always see the other cars coming from the other direction.
Mr. Masinda then gave a brief history of the area. The roads, back in the 1930’s were called Sharps Mill Road and Masinda Road. Part of the road was a driveway at the time, but when his grandfather was away at war, the road was cut through, and renamed. There was a horse barn on the other side and the dairy barn was around the corner as well as a mill and a button shop. Mrs. Masinda added that the road was also higher.
A school bus travelled through and First Selectman Mailhos observed, stating that there is not much room for the bus to travel through. Selectman Blessington stated that a round-about might not work with the structure of this road.
Mr. Masinda stated if the Town were to make it a three way intersection to accommodate fire vehicles, the tree would have to come out. He added that as a kid, he and his siblings used to play near the road because only one or two cars would go up and down the road, but as the Town grows, things change.
First Selectman Mailhos stated that she would be in favor of having Karl do engineering work and work up drawings for a “T” intersection.
First Selectman Mailhos moved to authorize the Town Engineer to draw up a plan to make the intersection into a “T”. The Town Engineers time would come from the general engineering line item and cost estimates will then be added to the CIP plan.
Selectman Blessington seconded the motion.
Vote: 3 Yes (Mailhos, Littell & Blessington) 0 No.
First Selectman Mailhos stated that there are a lot of people who ask for stop signs to calm traffic around town and she does not want to make precedence, however something is needed to keep the traffic on the right side of the road. This road has issues the way it was designed. Selectman Littell added that the way the road was designed did not take the modern-day autos into consideration.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:58 A.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Robin Campbell
