Andy Hannon, Matt Taiman and Zachary D’Agata presented a senior project request to provide a Willington Recreation Basketball Clinic to boys ages 3-8. After discussion and questions from the commission it was decided that this was an excellent idea and approved. It was determined that the clinic would two days on a weekend and the grades would be split to ensure a positive experience for the attendees. The clinic was scheduled for the weekend of 10/29 and 10/30. The commission thanked the three students for their idea and their effort.
Directors Report: By Teri Gareau
- Teri reviewed the on-going activities plus the upcoming recreation basketball season. It was determined that due to the challenges with gym time for all the teams, we would request Adult Volleyball to move their times from 7:30 on Monday and Thursday to 8:00 to allow more gym time for basketball. This would only be requested during the recreation basketball season.
- Uconn ice skate will happen again this year.
- Teri presented the final numbers for the Halls pond. The net loss was roughly $2,200. Discussion ensued regarding fees, number of registrations and lifeguard costs. It was determined to have more detailed discussions in the Spring.
- Summer camp was a positive $2000 but there were some challenges with less participants this year. We will review again in more detail in the Spring to determine changes that may be required.
IV. OLD BUSINESS
- Flag at RRAC is moving forward. Nick Townsend continues to proceed with getting the necessary approvals. The location has been determined but approval is needed by zoning.
- Reviewed the RRAC expenses to date.
- Reviewed fund #6. further discussion required.
- Discussed the maintenance schedule for the fields and also the new equipment at RRAC; pavilion.
- Benches are in. Discussion about installation. More information is needed to finalize who will do the installation.
V. NEW BUSINESS:
a. RRAC bike path. There was a complaint about bikes on the path at river road. As part of the signage, bikes will be prohibited from the paths.
b. Greg Suchy presented his request for 7/8 girls grade travel team. He is looking for town sponsorship but not requesting assistance from REC department. The commission decided to allow the this as long as Recreation department didn't have any responsibility other than communicating open gym time for travel league. It was also recommended that Mr. Suchy contact the Town Selectman to communicate intentions for insurance purposes.
c. Evaluations of the players for recreation department will happen at the same time as the clinic offered by the high school students.
ADJOURNMENT: Al motioned to adjourn, which was seconded by Mike Pinatti. The meeting adjourned at 9:25PM. The next meeting is scheduled for October 25, 2011 at 7:00PM at the Town Hall Office Building.
Respectfully submitted
