Committee Minutes
**Special Meeting**
November 17th 2009
6:30 PM -
Attending Members: Joseph Colangelo, Al Ference, Mike Pinatti, Greg Suchy, Rich Mindek, Bill Bilyak, and Josh Walsh were present. Recreation Director Teri Gareau was also in attendance.
Guests: Also in attendance were Willington residents Ed Taiman and John Wojtyna.
Meeting called to order by Chairman Colangelo at 6:45 PM.
The minutes from the previous WPRC meeting (10/27/09) were not reviewed due to the nature of this being a special meeting. The decision was made to review and approve those minutes at the following week’s regular meeting held 11/24/09. All members were unanimous in approval.
A. Joe Colangelo explained that he was approached by three senior students from E.O. Smith High School (Adam Swart, Ben Taiman, and Donny McMenemy) who wanted to Head Coach a recreation basketball team for the 2009-2010 upcoming season, as part of their “Senior Project” in order to graduate high school. There was some discussion that followed pertaining to rules and procedures set by the WPRC regarding the selection of head coaches, and more importantly the procedure set forth by the Commission pertaining to Senior Projects that involve coaching with the Rec. Basketball program. After much discussion, the Commission came up with the following rules and procedures for Senior Project Coaching:
- A Parent/Adult shall have first priority in Head Coaching a basketball team
- High school volunteers (Seniors) who want to Coach a Recreation basketball team may be allowed to assist the Head Coach if approved by the WPRC
- Any high school student/senior (from Willington) interested in coaching must submit a request directly to the WPRC no later than September of that upcoming basketball season. In the future, an application we create may be required. The WPRC will review the request or application and will require the applicant to attend a regular commission meeting prior to the start of the basketball season in order for Commission members to interview the coaching candidate. A decision will be made by vote at that time based on candidate’s request and interview process.
- The WPRC reserves the right to: choose the quantity of coaches per basketball season, choose the coaching candidate per team based on availability, and assign a specific team to the candidate, regardless of grade level.
Based off the above rules and procedures listed and after obtaining the consent of the Adult Parent head coaches, it was unanimously agreed upon that Ben Taiman and Adam Swart will assist Head Coach John Wojtyna with his 7th and 8th grade boy’s basketball team, and Donny McMenemy will assist Head Coach Butch Littell with the other 7th and 8th grade boy’s basketball team.
- Sunday afternoon High School basketball program has begun. Any high school aged person who is interested in playing this year must submit the required application and fee to the Recreation Department. This year there has been a change in the application--please be sure that the participant (high school student) signs the application and agrees to the rules, in addition to their parent/guardian signature.
- Plans for use of the upcoming S.T.E.A.P. grant have started. Joe Colangelo has agreed to make an organizational flow chart depicting the different tasks assigned to each Commission member that need to be completed. This chart will be reviewed and discussed at our regularly scheduled commission meeting next week as previously mentioned.
Rich Mindek motioned to adjourn, which was seconded by Joe Colangelo. The meeting adjourned at 8:17PM. The regular commission meeting is scheduled for next week, Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 at 7:00PM on the main level at the Town Hall Office Building, 40 Old Farms Road.
Respectfully submitted 11/28/09
Richard B. Mindek, I
