Attending Members: Joseph Colangelo, Mike Pinatti, Al Ference, Rich Mindek, Bill Bilyak, and Josh Walsh were present.   Recreation Director Teri Gareau was also in attendance.  Greg Suchy was not present.
Guests:  Also in attendance were Selectman David Charette, Helen Sahi, and Leo Mercado.
Meeting called to order at 7:06 PM.

  • APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes from the previous WPRC meeting (3/24/09) were reviewed.  Joe Colangelo made a motion to accept the minutes without changes, which was seconded by Bill Bilyak.  All members were unanimous in approval.

  • GENERAL DISCUSSION:
A.  Helen Sahi was invited by the Commission to speak about an Archery event being held in town.  There seemed to be some sort of mis-communication about who could and could not use town fields, specifically RRAC.  In this future, it is the Commission’s position that the fields in town are and should be used by any and all town affiliated teams/events, with the pre-approval and notification given to the Parks and Recreation Director.  For any persons wanting to use a town field, it was discussed that there should be a rent of $250, up to $200 refundable-mainly to make sure the fields are not damaged.  The main concerns include field overuse and picking up scattered trash.  At the suggestion of Bill Bilyak, the WPRC encouraged Ms. Sahi and their Archery Tournament to apply for field use again next year.

  • DIRECTORS REPORT:
  • Update on Programs: 2009 Karate, Session 3 begins April 29th , Fencing is on-going, The Herb Gardening class held April 7th was a success-17 people attended; Intro. to Dance ended 4/15; 420-4/24 MLS Soccer Camp had 14 participants; Traditional Archery was cancelled due to low enrollment; Yoga and Cardio Exercise classes are going well and continuing; Kayak Program-working on an application to be reviewed by town attorney.
  • Dates to Remember: 5/5/09 – Flower Gardening class at the Willington Public Library, 6-8PM-Fee $10;  5/26/09-WPRC monthly meeting 7PM Town Offices Building
  • Update on Projects:  Senior Recreation-purchased bocce, horseshoes, and croquet from LL Bean; using leftover HUD money.  These items should arrive this week.  Karl should have complete site plan soon; Field Maintenance-all fields were fertilized on 4/20/09-the Town Office fields were redone by Tolland-Public Works cleaned the entire area and graded and added material to fix all the pot holes; Teri painted the flag pole, benches, RRAC sign, and made new field signs for Town Office Fields.
  • OLD BUSINESS:
  • RRAC-there is still an ongoing problem with dog pet waste being left behind along the fields.  It was suggested that we purchase a pet waste station, block the entrance to the gate entering the field, better lighting, and/or signage.  Residents who bring their pets to the field are asked to please clean up after them.  Teri has agreed to look into these possible solutions and costs.
  • NEW BUSINESS:
  • The new Kayak Rental Program is underway.  Please see Director Teri Gareau for rental information and rental policies.
  • RRAC- a trash receptacle has been purchased and will be placed in the parking lot at the field.  All coaches will be given keys to the container and will be responsible for cleaning up trash after they use the field.
Discussion about a new WPRC logo was discussed.  Teri has agreed to get a couple designs and quotes before going forward with printing new shirts for the department.

  • ADJOURNMENT:
Rich Mindek motioned to adjourn, which was seconded by Joe Colangelo.  The meeting adjourned at 8:56PM.  The next meeting is scheduled for May 26th, 2009 at 7:00PM on the main level at the Town Hall Office Building, 40 Old Farms Road.

                                        Respectfully submitted 4/30/09
