Committee Minutes
Regular Meeting
September 28th, 2004
7:00 PM
Attending Members: Mike Harnad, Mike Pinatti, Steve Swart, Greg Blessing, Joseph Colangelo, Ed Taiman and Bob Portello. John Sahi the Assistant to the Recreation Commission was also in attendance.
Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes from the previous WRC meeting were reviewed. The motion to accept was by Joseph Colangelo with a second by Greg Blessing. Members were unanimous in approval.
GENERAL DISCUSSION:
RRAC construction progress to date was discussed, and will be reviewed again at the next meeting.
A suggestion was made to spread “round up” on the baseball field base paths.
It was agreed that no more improvements would be made to the rear 60’ base path field at the Town Hall Athletic Field. This will be used as a 90’ base path field with seating installed on the hill, and the rear diamond and backstop removed.
The STEAP grant was not awarded to Willington. An effort will be made to apply again and to improve our application process.
III. DIRECTORS REPORT:
Santa Claus has been booked for the carol sing.
Two ice times have been booked for public skating at UCONN.
Trips in conjunction with the Ashford Recreation Department have been booked on non-holiday breaks from school.
Basketball game times have been scheduled at Hall School.
The WRC will contact the BOF in regards to money appropriated for the RRAC. Ed Taiman will create a letter for the BOF acknowledging them for the appropriated money.
IV. OLD BUSINESS:
No Old Business was discussed.
V. NEW BUSINESS:
In regards to RRAC, more fill is being trucked in from the Big Y site in Tolland. This fill is being used in the baseball field and adjacent areas. The WRC will evaluate the contract at our next meeting in regards to completed items and work to finish before winter.
NOTE: At this time (7:38PM) the meeting was suspended for a presentation by John Prusak from Signs Of All Kinds. John will create a prototype of a sign for the entrance at the RRAC, and present it to the WRC within a week. At 8:10PM the meeting was returned to.
It was decided that the shirts to be ordered for the winter basketball program should be chosen in very different colors to avoid confusion during games. No travel team will be added to the program. The following dates were chosen for tryouts; 11/13/04 there will be four sessions to evaluate players and on 11/16/04 there will be a meeting of the WRC to place evaluated players on appropriate teams.
The schedule for tryouts is as follows; 8:30AM for 6-7-8 grade boys, 9:40AM for 6-7-8 grade girls, 10:50AM for 3-4-5 grade girls, 12:00NOON for 3-4-5 grade boys.
The official start of the season will be 12/14/04. The season will end the second week of February with single game elimination playoffs. Official practice will be on 11/20/04 and 11/27/04. There has been extra time scheduled by the WRC for optional basketball playing on Sunday and Tuesday nights. This time will used for practice and pick up games.
The closing date for basketball registration will be 11/13/04, with a fee of $40.00. Following this date an additional fee of $10.00 will be applied. Registration will be accepted until the day of the first game.
C. The Hall School basketball team will be discussed at a future meeting.
ADJOURMENT:
There was a motion made by Mike Harnad to adjourn, which Greg Blessing seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 9:32PM. The next regular WRC meeting was scheduled for October 25th, 2004 at 7:00PM.
