Willington Recreation Commission
Minutes from meeting of 4/27/04
Meeting commenced 7:15 p.m., Mike Pinatti, Mike Harnad, Ed Taiman, Greg Blessing, Steve Swart, Bob Portello, Joe Colangelo and John Sahi, were in attendance.
Minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed, Mike Harnad moved to accept the minutes in their present form, and Ed Taiman seconded the motion. Minutes approved.
General Discussion There was a general discussion Willington Day. Joe Colangelo said he
will set up the batting net, etc.
Directors Report John Sahi indicated that 17 people have signed up for archery. Everyone
agreed this was good start to a new program. The boating course was also a great success.
There was a discussion concerning the Center School field. Everyone thought the field looks great. John indicated that a soil analysis was taken at the Hall School fields in that the soil is low and phosphorus. The Town Hall infield was recently re-sodded by Liberty Landscaping. Everyone who had an opportunity to look at the field agreed with John that the quality of the work done was poor. There are gaps between sections of sod which will cause players to trip and fall, and will also cause the ball to bounce unevenly when it hits the infield. John agreed he will call Al Sadow and ask that he look into it. It was also agreed to hold payment until this matter is straightened out.
Old Business River Road site - the commission reviewed the plans for the site and there
was a general discussion concerning the layout and location of a future structure to hold a new gymnasium. Our engineer, Karl Acimovic previously provided us with various alternatives concerning where to place the building. The commission wants to John Sahi to ask Karl whether he can realine the access road to permit the building to be located outside of a right of way in favor of Northeast Utilities. There is also general discussion concerning whether there is sufficient top soil to do the job properly. Greg Blessing led a discussion concerning whether the slope of the land between the proposed baseball field and the all purpose field was sufficient to permit drainage. We agreed to look into this further. Joe Colangelo, Mike Pinatti and John Sahi discussed the need for utility
trenches. The commission agreed that all trenches should be done while the site is in its initial preparation phase. Knight Construction has already started working on the job and the commission believes they will done sometime within the next 30 days. The commission discussed well requirements, and the question arose as to what volume of water the well needs to provide in order to adequately service the field for watering, etc. The commission agreed we need to come up with cost estimates for the utility trenches, the installation of a well, and our soil requirements. We would then present our needs to the Board of Finance. There was a concern that when the trenches are dug for the water and electrical lines the contractor may run into one or more slabs of concrete or asphalt that were buried on the site by the Connecticut Department of Transportation many years ago. Joe Colangelo thought that instead of placing those utility lines 4 feet
below the surface, we should instead place them above the frost line and the water lines could then be blown out before the winter freeze.
8:17 p.m. - Steve Swart excused himself from the meeting.
The commission agreed to meet again on May 11, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the cost estimates that we will have hopefully received by then so the commission may attend the May 20, 2004 meeting of the Board of Finance in order to seek additional funding for the site.
Concert Series - the commission discussed that it cost approximately $500 per concert. Commission agreed to put on one concert this summer on August 21, 2004 from 6 - 8 p.m. Everyone agreed that the band known as Blackburns did a good job last year. John will contact them and see if they are interested in doing the concert again.
Opening Day for Little League - Joe Colangelo agreed to organize the pitch, hit and run activity.
Flag football - Mike Harnad suggested that we need to get information out to the school systems as soon as possible. The rest of the commission members agreed and John Sahi indicated he will look into a tri town competition.
8:38 p.m. - Mike Harnad moved to adjourn. Joe Colangelo seconded. All approved. Meeting adjourned.
