Mike Eldridge, First Selectman presented the Selectman’s budget proposal.  He gave an overview of the budget that was presented to the Board of Finance and listed the departments that were effected by increases and cuts. He then answered questions from members of the audience.

Wilbur Gangway, a Willington resident asked if the budget included funds for police protection.  He feels that more patrols are needed.  Kathy Blessing explained to Mr. Gangway that this has not been in the budget the last couple of years.  It is very difficult to get the State Police to cover time slots needed.  Mr. Gangway said that he spoke with the State Police and they told him that the Town should get a resident trooper.  Selectman Eldredge told Mr. Gangway to stop by his office to discuss the issue and see what can be done.

Dr. Berglund, Superintendent presented the budget proposal for the Board of Education.  She thanked the Board of Finance for their support this year with the budget.  She explained the changes to this years BOE budget.  She then answered questions from members of the audience.

The Board of Finance then answered remaining questions from the audience.

BOARD OF FINANCE                                                   -2-                                                            April 12, 2007

John Patton asked if the Board was going to wait to set the Mil rate?  Chairman Brown said that we would wait as long as possible, but that the tax collector has a deadline.

Bob Shabot, spoke in favor of open space.  He said that the Conservation Commission said in 1990 that it would be a good time to put aside money for open space.  In 1990 100 acres cast about 80,000, now it would be over a million.  The longer we procrastinate the more it will cost.

The hearing adjourned at approximately 7:37 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Debra Hlobik
Secretary, Board of Finance
