August 9, 2005
7:00 pm
Members Present:
Lynn Brown, Chairman Paul Schur – Alternate
Jim Harvey Geoff Prusak – Alternate
Bill Hodge
Kathy Blessing Members Absent:
Henry Becker Lisa Kenderdine
Chairman Brown called the Meeting to order at 7:00 pm.
Motion was made by Bill Hodge and seconded by Jim Harvey to seat Paul Schur for Lisa Kenderdine. All were in favor, motion carried.
PRESENT TO SPEAK – Mike Eldredge distributed to the Board a letter concerning the Library Grant.
Lynn Brown motioned that the Board of Finance recommend that the Board of Selectmen call a Town Meeting to increase the overall appropriation for the new Willington Public Library from $3,350,000 to $3,500,000. Paul Schur seconded.
Discussion followed by the Board members. One comment made asked why we couldn’t cut back on some costs; another comment was why we couldn’t wait on the furniture instead of spending $250,000 up front?
Discussion was then open to the public. Suzanne Chapman distributed two letters that were in support of the Library and read them for the record. Various members of the audience made comments and asked questions.
Paul Schur commented that part of the confusion was where the state grant was going to be used. At the Board of Finance meeting it was said that $150,000 contingency was going to be held back as a cushion. He is concerned that the contingency fund is seeping away. He personally cannot see going all the way back to the drawing board to try to save $500,000.
Chairman Brown informed the Library Board that the next time the well would be dry. He then called an end to the debate and called for a vote.
Vote was taken: 4 = Yes (Harvey, Becker, Schur, Blessing), 1 = No (Hodge). Motion carried.
Motion to adjourn made by Jim Harvey at 7:55 pm…seconded by Bill Hodge.~~ All in favor, motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
~~
Debra Hlobik, BOF Secretary
