Chairman Brown called the hearing to order at 7:01 P.M.

Chairman Brown gave an overview of the proposed budget for the 2004-2005 fiscal year.  We anticipate that State and Federal funding will be limited.   The expenditures of the general government are up almost $65,000 or 2% over the current budget.  We are still awaiting the Region #19 final figures.

Mike Eldridge, First Selectman presented the Selectman’s budget proposal.  He gave an overview of the budget that was presented to the Board of Finance and listed the departments that were effected by cuts.  He then answered questions from members of the audience.

Dr. Berglund, Superintendent presented the budget proposal for the Board of Education.  She explained what cuts had to be made to comply with the $100,000 cut from the Board of Finance.  They are working on getting lower rates from CL&P for electricity and bidding on property and liability insurance thru the town to be able to make more cuts.  Results will not be available till early summer.

John Patton brought two concerns before the Board.  First he expressed his concerns about the cut made to the Accrued Sick Days item #510.  His concern being that item is a liability of the town and if we ignore this now the funds will not be there when we need them.  His second concern was the cut made to Public Works, road maintenance.  He feels that funds should be put back into that account.  He is afraid that the Public Works will be “making due” with what they have and not what they need.

The Board of Finance then answered remaining questions from the audience.

The hearing adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Debra Hlobik
Secretary, Board of Finance
