Town Of Willington
Economic Development Commission Meeting
Meeting Minutes of
October 22, 2012
Attendees: Kim Kowalyshyn, Chairman Tom Treiber, Sec
Jackie Silverstein Tom Buccino
Opened Meeting at 6:04 PM
Approval of Minutes:
Kim moved to approve the meeting minutes from September 25, 2012. Jackie seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Old Business:
- Business Directory – Kim reported that funds from advertisements by Willington businesses now total $2195. This total excludes an additional $95 that should be in the mail to us. The EDC previously paid a $400 deposit to Anything Printed towards the printing/mailing costs of $2625. The $2625 covers copies that will be mailed to all Willington residents and businesses. As we will need an additional 500 copies ($375 more), we will continue to solicit advertisements. Kim also talked about missing data (phone numbers) on businesses that did not complete a fact sheet. Phone numbers need to be obtained by Commission members to complete the directory. Kim will email an updated business listing with page assignments to EDC members for research. Members will then
email her with information on business phone numbers located as well as situations where there is no phone number for the business. Entities with no phone number will be removed from the listing
- Love’s Travel Center and Dunkin Donuts Update – Kim reported that both applicants sought and obtained a change in a Town regulation that had basically prohibited “fast food” businesses. She also advised that the Zoning Board of Appeals denied Love’s Travel Center request for a variance in Town regulations governing septic system location.
- Business Feature on Website – Kim discussed ways to improve the way a featured business is displayed on our Website with the Town’s Webmaster.
- EDC Finances – Our $900 budget is still in tact.
- Business Networking Meeting - Jackie, who is taking the lead on this project, indicated that she has reserved the Community Room in the Library for Tuesday January 22, 2013 starting at 6:00 PM with Thursday January 24, 2013 as a snow date. Jackie suggested some preliminary topics that included marketing a small business, creation of a business association, future EDC initiatives. Jackie will present a more formal proposal at the next meeting.
- Ashford Business Association (ABA) - Kim will try to arrange a time for informal discussions with an ABA representative. Two possible dates were mentioned - 6:00 PM on Tuesday October 30 or on Monday November 5.
New Business:
- Sign Regulations – Kim is part of a PZC workshop reviewing Town sign regulations. She indicated that she is working with Signs of All Kinds in an effort to determine the types of signs that comply with Town regulations as well as other signs that might be appropriate.
- Meeting Date Changes - We will meet on November 26, 2012 and December 17, 2012 at 6:00 PM.
- Posting Minutes – Our minutes should now be emailed to those on distribution list.
