Town Of Willington
Economic Development Commission Meeting
Meeting Minutes of
June 20, 2012
Attendees: Kim Kowalyshyn, Chairman Tom Treiber, Sec
Jackie Silverstein
Opened Meeting at 7:09 PM
Approval of Minutes:
Jackie moved to approve the meeting minutes from April 25, 2012. Kim seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Old Business:
- Kim welcomed Tom Buccino as a new member. All but our two alternate seats have now been filled.
- Business Directory – Concerning the mailing of fact sheets to businesses completed earlier this month, Kim reported that she has received fact sheet responses from 13 businesses along with a total of $415 for advertisements. These funds will be used to fund printing and distribution of the business directory. Kim will send another e-blast to remind businesses to return the fact sheets and their checks for advertisements. She will also advise businesses that a copy of the fact sheet can be downloaded from the EDC website, completed, scanned and e-mailed back. Kim suggested that we also place a notice to Willington businesses on the calendar in the Journal Inquirer. If necessary, we will begin direct canvassing of businesses on or about July 11. Joe and Pam
at Anything Printed estimated the cost of printing and mailing the directory to every Willington household will be between $4,000 and $5,000 depending on the number of pages printed. Kim will negotiate a contract based on a price per page and a $400 refundable deposit. The charges for advertising have been revised to $35 (business card size), $60 (half page) and $95 (full page).
- Love’s Travel Center Update – None.
- Business Feature on Website – The first business profile (Becker Companies) appeared on our website in June. Willington Pizza will be featured in July. Each business profile will remain on our website under caption Previously Featured Businesses.
- EDC Finances – Kim reported that we have about $447 left in our current budget.
- State of Town Meeting write-up - Jackie went over her draft. We refined our “challenges” to include one of our ongoing objectives, “creating an inviting business environment”. For example, we need to develop automated forms that can be completed on-line (e-channel or e-business solutions to data collection) that make interaction with businesses, etc. easier and faster. We also discussed 2012-2013 priorities which include continuing the monthly business feature, promoting the development of a Willington Business Association and hosting two business networking meetings – the first in Mid October will combine a “meet and greet” session with a presentation on “marketing your business”. Jackie will check speaker availability,
and Kim will make sure that the Library Community Room is available.
- Wilderness Way/Ray Crossen – Red Rock Events – Warrior Challenge. Kim advised that permits have not as yet been obtained for the event. She will contact the organizer for a status.
New Business:
- New Business Activity and Contacts – None.
- Correspondence – Kim was copied in on an e-mail from Susan Yorgensen to PZC members concerning the proposed Dunkin Donut franchise. In the email, Susan advised that fast food restaurants of any kind were not allowed in Town. We were confused as there are two at the Truck Stop – Dunkin Donuts and Burger King. Kim will ask Susan for clarification.
Public Comment:
- None.
Ongoing Activities:
- We have two alternate seats open. We are extremely pleased that Tom Buccino has filled the full seat vacancy. He will be a great addition to the Commission.
Meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM. Next meeting to be held on September 26, 2012 at 6:00 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Tom Treiber
