Town Of Willington
Economic Development Commission Meeting
Meeting Minutes of
June 28, 2011
Attendees: Dave Charette, Chairman Walter Parsell
Jackie Silverstein
Absent/Excused: Kim Kowalyshyn, Sec.
- Meeting opened at 6:06 pm. Dave requested Jackie take minutes in Kim’s absence.
Approval of Minutes:
- Dave moved to approve the meeting minutes from April 26, 2011. Walter seconded. Three in favor; motion passed.
Old Business:
- Work on Business Directory – Tabled until the next meeting.
- Love’s Travel Center Update – Application has been accepted; public hearing date has been established and Dave will attend.
New Business:
- Phelps Plaza Owner & Businesses Discussion – EDC is pleased to have a good turnout from the owner and businesses regarding the invitation to attend the April EDC meeting and talk about their concerns. There was good feedback and open discussion. Dave has reached out since the meeting and extended an open offer from the EDC to help address and move ahead with issues. Members of the Town of Willington Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Committee also attended and were a help in providing their knowledge and suggestions to the issues noted.
- New Business Activity and Contacts – Mr. Les Doty’s application for an in-home tattooing business has been accepted by P&Z; Dave is providing assistance to Mr. Doty on the process; a public hearing is the next step for this business.
- Mill Works Complex – Dave and Kim met with Tom and performed a walk-through of the building. This is a nice building; limited parking & septic; spaces appear suitable for use; one space has access for light industrial; presently zoned as residential. Tom has some interest in parties that would consider renting space. One is a recording studio, the other a graphic design & fine arts studio. Tom has a nicely prepared package for anyone interested in renting space from him; however, he has noted that the process is arduous and costly for a small business owner. Since the site is presently zoned for residential use, Tom has gone before the Zoning Board of Appeals for a Special Permit. Dave spoke on behalf of small businesses and requested consideration for making the process easier. Some suggestions were made and Dave is
following up with Tom.
Public Comment:
Ongoing Activities:
- Jim Poole has resigned his seat on the EDC. One full seat is now available in addition to the two alternate positions that are presently open.
- Next meeting to be held on September 27, 2011 at 6 PM. Dave may schedule a meeting prior to that date, if needed.
Meeting Adjournment:
- At 6:46 PM Dave moved to adjourn the meeting. Walter seconded. Three in favor; motion passed. Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Jackie D. Silverstein
