Chairman Patton called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm.

  • Approval of Minutes
Vice Chairman Poole moved to approve the minutes of February 6, 2012.
First Selectman Mailhos seconded the motion.
All in favor.  Motion carried.

  • Discussion of CIP Projects
Lynn Nicholls, Director of Public Works gave a tour of the Public Works facility.  Lynn began the tour in her office.  She showed the Committee the current fuel system, which monitors all of the fuel that comes in and is used.  This item is on CIP for next year.  She presented the equipment and camera surveillance system.   She added that all of the furniture in the offices and break room has come from the swap shed.

The supply room is stocked with equipment; nuts and bolts.  The upper level has street signs and the waste oil heater is housed up there. The waste oil heater should be up and running, connected to the new waste oil tank within a month.

Directly in back of the building, there is a generator, propane and a calcium tank as well as the new waste oil tank.

First Selectman Mailhos stated that the 1997 Dog Warden’s caravan is temporarily staying at Public Works until we hire a new Dog Warden.  She suggested that the van will need to be replaced at some point.

Chairman Patton suggested having the frame on one of the dump trucks be sandblasted and repainted. There is a lot of surface rust on it now, but sandblasting it will go a long way.

Lynn showed everyone the FEMA trailer that was received by a Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) grant.  We are a hosting chapter and the trailer, which is one of three in DEMHS Region 4. The trailer can be used for any emergency situation or special event that requires safety precautions.

The Committee then looked at a variety of apparatus, including the sweeper and the current salt shed.  Note:  The newly proposed salt shed for f/y 2015-2016 is twice the size of the current shed and will be housed at the Material Storage area.

The Committee then went back into the garage to look at the backhoe.  Ken Schoppmann asked if it would be worth selling the bucket loader and the backhoe, and using the money towards a new backhoe; one that would do the work of both pieces of equipment. Lynn said they use the bucket loader almost daily, and it would not be feasible to get rid of it.

The Committee then went to the Transfer Station, to look at the compactor, guard rails and grounds and then to the Public Works Material Storage Area, where materials are stored.

Melissa Welsh asked for a list of equipment with number of hours/miles on them.
*List is attached.

Next meeting will be June 11, 2012 beginning on Turnpike Road and then to Polster Road Bridge.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM
Respectfully Submitted,

Robin Campbell
Recording clerk
