Open Burning Season starts on January 15, 2016, and runs until May 1, 2016. The Wayland Fire Department issues permits and monitors burning and burning conditions daily, in accordance with Department of Environmental Protection Regulations (310 CMR DEP 7.07).
Permits are free and can be applied for online by going to the Town of Wayland website and clicking on the Open Burning 2016 link. Once the seasonal permit has been issued, you will need to check the website daily to be sure conditions are ok for burning and that burning is allowed. If burning is allowed, you will be able to activate the permit for the day via the website. If you do not have the ability to go online for the permit, the property owner must go in person to the Public Safety Building and fill out a permit application. Once approved you will need to
call the dispatch center after 8:15 AM and check on the burning status for each day you want to burn and activate the permit. Every morning after consulting with DEP the on duty shift officer will either allow or disable the ability to burn that day. Fires cannot be started prior to 9:00 AM and must be attended until completely extinguished at 4:00 PM. You may only burn brush. You may not burn leaves, grass, hay, stumps, tires or any construction debris. Brush is considered any tree, branch or limbs that are no larger than four inches in diameter.
In the interest of Public Safety, the Fire Chief reserves the right to deny or revoke a permit at any time for the season. If you have any questions please contact the On Duty Fire Department Shift Officer at 508-358-7951.
