Open Burning Permits for 2014 (registrations) are now available online. The daily activation of your burning permit (and the open burning) is not allowed until January 15th, but feel free to
apply for your permit now.
After applying for the season-long permit, you must activate (or exercise) your 2014 open burning permit for any particular day that you intend to burn during the season (January 15th through May 1st). To activate your burning permit, enter your burning permit number on the website after 8:30 each morning, starting on January 15, 2014. As long as your permit is valid and weather conditions are favorable, burning will be allowed from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
Open burning in Massachusetts is regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and enforced by the local Fire Department. Open burning season runs from January 15 to May 1, 2014. A two-step process controls open burning. First, you must have applied for and received a seasonal open burning permit and every day that you intend to burn, you must apply for permission to do so. Permission to burn on any particular day is determined by the atmospheric conditions. The fire department will make every effort to determine by 8:30 AM whether or notopen burning may be conducted that day. If allowed on that particular day, burning can start at 10:00 AM. The Fire Chief reserves the right to deny open burning on any day due to weather or other environmental conditions.
For the fourth year, the Wayland Fire Department is accepting open burning permit applications online via the Town of Wayland website. Applications may be submitted now, and the permits may be received now, but the actual burning (“exercising your permit”) may not take place until January 15, and only if weather conditions are favorable.
Residents will find the link to the burning permit registration page here. There is no cost to apply for, receive, or exercise your open burning permit. We believe you will find the online system an easy way to obtain and use your open burning permit. When you apply, have the following information available to enter on the application:
- Email address
- First name, middle initial and last name
- Full Address
- Up to three phone numbers where you can be reached (tell us your main phone number and also how to reach you while you are monitoring your fire).
After verifying that you have read and understood the open burning regulations, your application will lead to a seasonal burning permit being issued to you and a confirmation email will be sent. You should make note of the permit number because you’ll need that to exercise your permit each day you intend to burn.
Permission to burn for the day may be obtained by entering your permit information on the website, starting at 8:30 AM on the morning of the day you wish to burn. The website will tell you whether or not the atmospheric conditions are favorable to burn. With a valid permit and authorization to burnthat day, the fire may be started at 10:00 AM.
The Fire Department will continue to offer the traditional walk-in (or call in) registration for those that do not have computer access.Dispatchers in the Public Safety Building can assist you. The business number of the Wayland Fire Department is 508-358-7951.
Detailed open burning regulations can be found below and on the Wayland Fire Department website.
