Council Minutes March 31, 2008

PRESENT:        Chairman Friedman, Councilor Hathaway, Councilor King, Councilor Parker, Councilor Perkins, Manager W. Reed, Deputy Clerk K. Humphrey, Fire Chief G. Martin, Assessor A. Thomas, Police Chief M. Leonard and Firefighter N. Sirois.

ITEM 1. The March 31, 2008 Veazie Town Council meeting was called to order at 7:00PM.
        
ITEM 2. Consideration of the Minutes
Motion By:  Councilor Perkins—to accept the March 17, 2008 meeting minutes as written.  Seconded: Councilor Parker, Voted 3-0-2 in favor. Councilor Hathaway and Councilor King abstained due to their absence.  

ITEM 3. Consideration of the Agenda
Councilor Hathaway wished to give an update on the School Consolidation.  This replaced the School Committee update since they were unable to attend.  

ITEM 5a.        Fire Department  - Update (Taken out of order)
Firefighter Nick Sirois gave a presentation on the department’s trip to the E-One manufacturing plant in Ocala, Florida.  The presentation showed how a fire truck is made.  Councilor Hathaway outlined that he had recently been in Florida and took a tour of the plant as well.  
                
Chairman Friedman thanked Firefighter Nick Sirois for the presentation.  

ITEM 4a.        School Committee-Update (Replaced with School Consolidation Update)
The School Committee was unable to attend the Council meeting so this item was replaced with an update from Councilor Hathaway on the School Consolidation.

Councilor Hathaway stated that the RSU process is moving along, there is still a lot of work to do.  The committee is meeting once a week and there is discussion of moving to two meetings a week.  The goal is to wrap things up by summer and then have the townwide referendum in November.

Councilor Hathaway outlined that he is on the Assets and Personnel Subcommittee.  There was discussion on what land will go with the school to the RSU.  Councilor Hathaway requested a map of the school area to bring with him to the next RSU committee meeting.

ITEM 6.         Comments from the Public
There were no comments from the public.

ITEM 7. Manager’s Report
a.      The Town Council reviewed a copy of the Budget Committee’s meeting minutes.
b.      The Town Council reviewed a copy of the signed final Orono-Veazie Fire Service Mutual Aid Agreement.
c.      The Town Council reviewed a copy of the Sewer District’s Assessment given to the Town.

Councilor Perkins asked what the sewer assessment was last year.  Manager Reed stated it was the same.

Councilor Hathaway inquired about the State Street incident.  He was curious about the cost of the cleanup containment.  Chief Leonard outlined that the cost was covered by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the only cost to the Town was personnel and the use of the fire trucks.

ITEM 8. Requests for Information and Town Council Comments
There were no requests for information or Town Council comments.

ITEM 9. Warrants: Town Warrant 20, Town Payroll Warrant 20, School Warrant 20, School Lunch Warrant 20 and School Payroll Warrant 20 were circulated and signed.  
        
ITEM 10.        Adjournment: Motion: Councilor King—to adjourn the March 31, 2008 Town Council Meeting. Seconded: Councilor Hathaway—there was no further discussion. Voted 5-0. Meeting adjourned  7:40pm.
