ORDINANCE COMMITTEE
MINUTES
MONDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m.
Present were Chair Rick Dalla Valle, Council members Marie Soliani and Tom Jerram, Economic Development Director Rose Ponte and Corporation Counsel Ernestine Weaver.
The Committee’s only order of business was to consider establishing an Arts and Culture Commission. A written ordinance was presented for consideration. Currently, there is a Committee performing these functions and the Committee has requested that it become a Commission to ensure that Arts and Culture will be promoted in the City in the future.
The committee was formed to respond to a call from the State Department of Arts and Culture, and it has since assisted with “Light Up Main” and is planning to work with the Historical Society on a Civil War Re-enactment in the Spring.
Councilor Soliani was concerned as to how communication would be managed. Mrs. Ponte shared that the Commission would be working closely with the Northwest Connecticut Arts Council and that the Commission events would be incorporated into the Northwest Connecticut Arts Council’s calendar. Also, that calendar could be linked into the City website so there would be access to information without any additional cost.
On a motion by Councilor Soliani seconded by Councilor Jerram the sub-committee unanimously voted to recommend the establishment of an Arts and Culture Commission to the full council and to set the matter for public hearing at the Council’s next meeting.
There being no further business, on a motion by Councilor Dalla Valle seconded by Councilor Jerram, the meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
