BOARD OF PUBLIC SAFETY
MARCH 18, 2009
A SPECIAL MEETING of the Board of Public Safety was held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, in the Senior Center Shuffleboard Room.
Those in attendance included Mayor Ryan J. Bingham, members of the Board of Public Safety Gerald A. Zordan, Richard L. Zaharek, Douglas J. Benedetto, James E. Potter, and Robert C. Zordan, Deputy Police Chief Michael Maniago, Traffic Officer Robert Shopey, Lt. Michael Emanuel, Deputy Fire Chief Jaye Giampaolo, Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Thomas Vannini and Comptroller Alice Proulx.
Mayor Bingham called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
PRESENTATION: POLICE
Acting Police Chief Michael Maniago said a good relationship between the police and business community ensures a thriving business climate. The 85 sworn officers answer over 900 calls a week, an increase of 30% in 4 years. There were 4022 traffic stops made in 2008, and 1651 motor vehicle accidents investigated. Budget cost increases are due to union and civilian pay raises, a 53rd week of pay this year, department vehicles repair; Subtracting these, the 2009/2010 budget is $13,345 less than last year’s fiscal budget.
PUBLIC SAFETY MISC. #418
Mayor Bingham said he has no recommended cuts for this budget.
On a motion by Commissioner Potter, seconded by Commissioner R. Zordan,
the board voted unanimously to tentatively approve the Public Safety Budget of $1,900,275.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS #428
On a motion by Commissioner Potter, seconded by Commissioner Zaharek,
the board voted unanimously to tentatively approve the Emergency Preparedness Budget of $33,086. Commissioner G. Zordan abstained.
FIRE DEPT. #505
On a motion by Commissioner Potter, seconded by Commissioner R. Zordan,
the board voted to tentatively approve the Fire Dept. Budget of $4,807,028 with Deputy Chief Giampaolo’s modifications. Commissioner Benedetto opposed.
POLICE DEPT. #1274
On a motion by Commissioner R.Zordan, seconded by Commissioner Zaharek,
the board voted unanimously to tentatively approve the Police Dept. Budget of $8,481,174.
CANINE #1689
On a motion by Commissioner G.Zordan, seconded by Commissioner Benedetto, the board voted unanimously to tentatively approve the Canine Budget of $99,931.
TRAFFIC #1946
On a motion by Commissioner Potter, seconded by Commissioner R. Zordan,
the board voted unanimously to tentatively approve the Traffic Budget of $313,308. Commissioner Benedetto opposed.
ADJOURNMENT #2139
On a motion by Commissioner Benedetto, seconded by Commissioner Potter, the board voted unanimously to adjourn at 8:00 p.m.
