Mayfest to showcase downtown Torrington
Merchants to participate in window dressing contest
TORRINGTON – The streets of downtown will be bustling with fun for the entire family next month as the first annual Mayfest gets underway with performances by the Warner Theatre and Nutmeg Conservatory of the Arts, sidewalk sales, children’s activities and street vendors.

Merchants will dress their store windows to win prizes during a contest that will be judged May 3 by Mayor Ryan Bingham and other community leaders. Winners of those prizes will receive plaques of recognition during Mayfest.
Downtown merchants also have donated more than $1,000 in prizes for a raffle to be conducted during Mayfest. Prizes include gift certificates to Kid Stuff, Spino’s Menswear, Amelda’s Boutique, Yankee Pedlar Inn, Chiane’s and Reibmans, accessories from Remember When, Bijoux, L.A. Bridal and DNA Uniform plus much more from other merchants.
Activities, which will be ongoing throughout the day, include performances by the cast of “Cats,” which opens that night at the Warner Theatre. Dancers from the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts also will perform selections during the day. Children’s activities include arts and crafts, face painting and balloons. Parking at downtown municipal lots and meters will be free.

Mayfest 2006 was conceived and developed, in cooperation with the city of Torrington, as part of the Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership NW program. In its third year, Leadership NW has brought together a comprehensive group of community leaders who participate in seminars, panel discussions and site tours with a focus on the needs and services of the community and leadership development. The group is divided into teams to create and implement diverse projects for the betterment of the communities in which they serve.
