Tour of CT - Downtown Torrington - Sunday, May 22
The Tour of Connecticut is more than an international sporting event: it’s a community festival for the entire family to enjoy. Each of the three stops on the Tour CT has its own set of amusements and distractions to keep parents and children amused during breaks from the racing action.
Chris Clarks’ Mongoose/Hyundai Bicycle Stunt Show kicks off the family activities at 3:00 on Main Street in Torrington, Clark’s exciting show, complete with ramps and obstacles, has been performed for the Vans Warped Tour, NBC’s Gravity Games, and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Following the stuntman will be the Shimano Youth Series Kid’s Sprints at 3:30 for children ages 3 to 12. The children will race down the same Tour of Connecticut finish line as the pros in a series of sprints. The pro race returns to Torrington at around 4:00 and families are encouraged to stay for the spectacle. Admission is free, t-shirts and medals for participants.
Hot dog and other food vendors will be on-site. There will be a Sponge Bob Bouncer, and a Looney Toons 5 in 1 Bouncer. From 11:30am to 2:30pm, Robo the Clown will be entertaining the children. From 2:00pm to 3:00pm there will be a Chris Clark Bicycle Stunt Show. From 2:00pm to 5:00pm Matica will be offering an interactive magical trunk experience, Tails the Clown will be offering face painting, and Magician Bryan Lizotte will mesmerize the children.
The Tour of Connecticut is a three-day professional bicycle road race for men.
Stage One is a 40-mile race in New Haven around the famed Green. Start time is 6:00 pm.
Stage Two is a grueling 62-mile race on a four-mile circuit within the city limits of Waterbury. It has been called the hardest race in North America. Start time is 12:00 pm
Stage Three covers 137-miles through the hills and valleys of Litchfield Hills with the start and finish in Torrington. A recreational ride for weekend warriors and children’s races are part of the day’s family activities. Start time is 11:20 am with children’s races and the final laps of the men’s race beginning at 3:00 pm.
The Tour of Connecticut is a sanctioned by USA Cycling, the official governing body of the sport and is a stop on their prestigious NRC (National Racing Calendar) series. For more information go to www.usacycling.org
