The Magnificent 7

PRESS RELEASE

THE MAGNIFICENT 7
Torrington has long enjoyed unique architecture and many beautiful buildings and properties.  These are special places that have had the time and effort put in to ensure the properties are well maintained, attractive and a source of pride for their owners.  Places like the Venetian, Reibman’s, Work Center, Torrington Historical Society, Nutmeg Conservatory and the Warner Theatre in our downtown area; the stately historic homes and businesses along Prospect Street and Migeon Avenue; and the numerous commercial properties that have taken advantage of the facade improvement program; have projected an attractive face on Torrington and have long been a source of pride in our community.

There are other properties that haven’t always had the care and updating that these model properties have had.  The MAGNIFICENT 7" is an attempt at recognition for those properties, that over the last two years, have taken steps to elevate their properties from ‘fair’ to ‘good’, or from ‘good’ to ‘outstanding’. The owners of the properties selected have invested time, effort, sweat, love and money at a time when the City was determined to begin a Renaissance by fighting blight, bringing a courthouse to the city and planning for our downtown revitalization.  Their initiative, creativity and vision is representative of the energy that is driving Torrington’s Renaissance and is inspiration to make Torrington a better place to live and work.

It is time people like these were recognized.

The criteria for being selected for the MAGNIFICENT 7 is:

1.  Improvements had to be made to the exterior of the property (facade, landscaping, street scape etc.) and completed between 11/2002 & 11/2004  (Coinciding with the time the Mayor’s Task Force on Blight has been working)

2.  The improvements have had to make a dramatic change to the property and to the surrounding neighborhood.  (Evidence of this could be neighbors starting improvements on their properties etc.)

3.  All required permits must have been obtained and all improvements must meet code.

Each member of the Mayor’s Task Force on Blight were asked to nominate their favorite properties that meet the above listed criteria.  From that list the top seven were chosen by the Task Force to be recognized, and they are;

THE MAGNIFICENT 7 (In random order)
