TORRIGNTON – The Mayor’s Renaissance Team will plant thousands of donated daffodil and tulip bulbs Sunday (Oct. 24, 2004) at 10:30 a.m., at Coe Park.
The event is sponsored by Maple Meadows Farms, Home Deport, Wal*Mart, Agway, Blue Seal Feed and Moscarillos. These area businesses donated the flower bulbs. Patrick Herzig, owner of Maple Meadows in Terryville, has agreed to oversee the planting.
Torrington’s Red Lobster restaurant is also sponsoring the event and will donate food and refreshments for volunteers.
“We had to cancel this once before because of bad weather, but no matter what Mother Nature has in store for us Sunday, these bulbs are getting in the ground,” said David Rivera, Mayor Owen J. Quinn’s chief of staff.
The Renaissance Team is a group of volunteers from Torrington and area towns. Its mission is to help promote a positive image of Torrington and participate in volunteer activities that spruce up the city.
“It’s a very unstructured and low-pressure type group,” Mayor Quinn said. “People can come and help when they can and participate as much as they want.
“The Team’s mission is to make a difference in the city by doing things, great and small, to change Torrington for the better,” Mayor Quinn said. “Planting flower bulbs may not seem like a big deal, but every little bit helps and sometimes symbolic little gestures can lead to positive improvements and big change.”
Anyone wishing to take part in the bulb planting can show up at the park.
