Mayor Owen J. Quinn recently announced the city’s August 14, 2004 Heritage Day celebration will be dedicated this year in memory of John Ponte, the well-known city business man and longtime Torrington resident. Mr. Ponte, 44, was owner of two coffee shops in Torrington. He was a longtime community volunteer and although he moved to Harwinton in recent years, he remained involved in Torrington organizations like the Elks, youth baseball and the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts.
“John was a close friend of mine and he epitomized civic responsibility and caring for his community,” Quinn said. “He loved Torrington and many in this city are deeply saddened by this tragedy.”
The Heritage Day celebration at Coe Park will bring together Torrington’s ethic communities the past and present in Torrington so they can celebrate their cultures through food, dance and music.
“John was a positive person who believed in making Torrington better and my sincerest sympathies go out to his wife, Rose, his children and indeed the entire Ponte family,” Quinn said.
“This year’s Heritage Day will be dedicated in his name,” Quinn said. “He was very proud of his Italian roots and I’m heartbroken that he will not be here to celebrate that day with us.”
