TORRINGTON - Mayor Owen J. Quinn announced today he's formed an advisory committee to help better understand the concerns and issues facing the city's growing Hispanic population.
The mayor has appointed nine city and area people to serve on the Mayor's Committee on Hispanic Affairs. The newly appointed group will hold their first meeting May 26, 2004 at 6:30 p.m., in City Hall's auditorium.
Mayor Quinn decided to create the group in response the city's ever-growing Hispanic population comprised of people from dozens of Spanish-speaking countries and cultures.
“Certainly Torrington's changing and I want to make sure I understand the concerns and issues facing the city's Hispanic population,” Quinn said. “What's happening in Torrington with the influx of Spanish-speaking people is no different from 100 and more years ago when Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants made their way to the United States and settled in cities like Torrington.”
“The immigration of hardworking and ambitious people has always made our country, and cities like ours, stronger,” Quinn said. “I welcome these new citizens to our community and want to know more about them.”
The men and women that have agreed to serve on this committee come from a wide range of backgrounds and represent a multitude of Spanish-speaking cultures.
“Their professional careers and experiences are just as diverse and I think they will not only be able to advise me, but also provide important information and possibly services to the Hispanic community,” he said
“Torrington is a great city, and I look forward to working with this committee to make it even greater,” Quinn said.
Committee members include: Jaime Borja, Jhonny Camacho, Daniel Core, Chon Escobar, Rev. Gustavo Lopez, Marco Monroy, Luis Pizarro, Rose Ponte and Rev. Edgar Trinadad.
