John G. Carl
(1952 – 2016)
John Gilchrist Carl, 64, Tolland, MA, passed away on Monday October 17 surrounded by loved ones. John was born September 15, 1952 in Middletown, CT to John H. and E. Norene (Adams) Carl. John grew up in Madison, CT on the shore where he developed a passion for fishing, boats and a deep love of nature. John was an artist, transforming beaten-up wooden boats into beautiful and functional vessels. John, known for the mischievous twinkle in his eye, caught the attention of the lovely Jo-Ann. They were wed on July 21, 1984 in Suffield, CT. Together they built a home tucked away in the woods in their Western Mass hilltown where they raised two children to appreciate hard work and share their love for the outdoors. John is survived by his wife Jo-Ann (Holcomb) Carl of Tolland, MA, his daughter Hillary Carl of Worthington, MA,
his son Casey Carl and his wife Sydney (Adams) Carl of Granville, MA, his parents John H. and E. Norene (Adams) Carl, formerly of Madison, CT, sisters Deborah N. Smith and her husband Crawford of Richmond, VA, Penny J. Bzdak and her husband James of Keene, NH, Robin L. Dean and her husband Royce of Durham, NC, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Douglas M. Carl of Madison, CT. His family will receive friends on Friday, October 21, 12 Noon-1 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of John G. Carl to Office of Development, Yale New Haven Hospital, Attn: Smilow Cancer Center of Torrington, P.O.
