Recreation Committee Minutes 03/15/2007
SUNAPEE RECREATION COMMITTEE
MEETING MINUTES
March 15, 2007

Present:  Chris Williams, Patricia Halpin, Chuck Weinstein, Janet Cain, Paul Skarin, Scott Blewitt, Brian Garland, Melissa Eastman

This meeting was held at the Safety Services Building.

Meeting minutes from February for review and accepted.

Update on Dewey Field Project – There is still a question about whether these will be hike or bike trails.  Scott will check on this.  A suggestion was made to take the bike race money and put it into Webb Forest.
Mark Usko talked with Tony about doing some work at Veteran’s Field while it is still cold.

Basketball – Is over as of last night.  The banquet was very well attended.  There was a volunteer of the year award which was going to go to Steve Whitehead but could not be presented as he is out of town.  Also want to recognize other volunteers.

Rock Bass Tournament – The permit has been sent in for the 2nd Saturday in August which is the 11th.  The Recreation Department is responsible for everything, for example, if anyone (like boy scouts, girl scouts, etc.) makes any money at the event it goes to the recreation department and then back to the organization.  Any organization that makes money must have their own insurance.
There are many details to this.  Scott will need to review the minutes and information from Cory McGrath.

Egg Hunt – Scheduled for 4/7 at Veteran’s Field if weather permits for 8 years old and younger.

Baseball/softball/t-ball signups are going on now.  This information has been emailed out and is also on the web site.  There were also sign ups at the basketball awards last night.  Scott will be at the gym for the next 2 Saturdays as well.
The question came up as to whether there are gloves available for kids who do not have them.  There are a number of gloves in the shed for that purpose.  Scott will also send out an email asking for donations and will do this for all sports.

Senior Events – There was a discussion over senior events in town and their lack of participants.  It was suggested that some of that group come to our meeting and we can help publicize.  Could there be a link between seniors and recreation?  Do seniors meet regularly?  Marilyn Morse is the official President and Scott will make contact with her to get more information about their group.  They are not going to the Flower Show this year.

Summer Programs – There are 10 signed up for soccer camp so far.
There are 2 Red Sox trips planned.
An ad has been placed for beach help – we should have a good amount of staff returning back.  Mary Lyman will be the manager again and she will need an assistant.  There are lifeguard classes going on in New London now.  Scott left a message at the Hogan Center that we need lifeguards.
Beach opens for weekends on Memorial Day weekend and swimming lessons will start at the end of June.
We will offer an afternoon or evening swim lesson.  We could rope off an area to segregate lessons.
Could there be a gate on the entrance to the beach to prevent children from running out in the road?
There continue to be concerns about the competency of the lifeguards.  They seem to spend time visiting rather than watching the beach.  Are we following the red cross guidelines?  Scott will take up issues with Mary and she will come to a Spring meeting.  Should there be a chair in the water?

Softball Clinic – The Friday night clinic (Harry Blood) is full.  Time is 4:30pm-6:30pm.  There is a 15-20 child limit with a cost of $100.00.
Tony Milewski (cost $500.00) will focus on batting and defensive skills.  Last year there were 125 people which were too many for all to have a good experience.  May have to cut off at 50.  Should we break up age groups in the future?  The younger children could learn from the older ones, Tony can’t do it all.

Movie Night – There will be another movie night – this time it will be held in Sherburne gym and will start earlier.  Should we do 2 movies, 1 at 6:00pm and 1 at 8:00pm?  The small screen cost is $700.00, the large screen cost is $1,000.00.  Scott will check with the Middle Link to see what they used for their movie night.  Screen at SMHS?  Scott will call John Reed.

Flyer from UNH on the Little Red Wagon Performance.  The summer drama club does this for toddlers to 5th grade.  Thoughts – do under a ten?  In the harbor? Rt. 11 Field?  Quack Shack?  Scott will call UNH to see what they prefer when they perform and to check on dates available, etc.

Bike Helmet Fair – could be tied in with safety seat checks?

April Vacation – Can we set up anything for the kids to do over their April school vacation?  Open gym?  Do a movie?  Scott will talk to John Reed about a Wednesday night movie.
Trip to Smitty’s in Tilton.  Could use a school bus for transportation.  Would need chaperones.

Dexter’s Inn – John said that we could set up a program with them for the kids at school for cross country skiing.  He will come to a future meeting.

Impact of voting on future recreation projects?
The Town needs a community center.
What is the Town’s master plan?
Rt. 11 has outlived itself.  It is ready for a building, playground, skatepark, etc.  (If all works out at Dewey Field.)

Next meeting is scheduled for April 10 at 7:00pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Melissa Eastman
