Little Free Pantry Installed at the Senior Center
Below is a message from the latest edition of the Senior Center Newsletter regarding the installation of a Little Free Pantry.  I wish to make all townspeople aware of the wonderful project.

Leon A. Gaumond Jr.
Town Administrator

The Sturbridge Girl Scout Junior  Troop 64510 built, installed, and is stocking a Little Free Pantry outside of the Sturbridge Senior Center as a way of serving the community by providing a free, convenient location to distribute donated food and other items.  This is in keeping with the principles embodied in the Girl Scout Law, to be Friendly and Helpful, and Make the World a Better Place.

Little Free Pantries are small, usually free-standing cabinets which contain food or other small items like paper towels, toothbrushes, or whatever people have donated, or otherwise meet a specific demand in the community.  Anyone may go to a Little Free Pantry, see if it contains any items they might need, and take the items.  There is no expectation that the person will return the same or similar items later, but people are welcome to donate items to the pantry when they wish.  They are not meant to be a primary source of food for anyone, merely a free convenience for all members of the community, and an opportunity for members of the community to donate, share, and enjoy the kindness of others. Community member can donate canned goods, jarred food, and toiletries. The only restriction is no food in cardboard or plastic containers. Food should contain original label and be in date.

This project is similar in design and scope to the Little Free Library that several members for the troop, as well as the troop leaders, participated in when part of Daisy Troop 14412, which was installed near the Cedar Street playground last year.

The troop will take on the responsibility of monitoring the pantry for both structural integrity and monitoring the contents for expired products, vandalism, etc. The girls were excited for their partnership with the Senior Center, and proud of the approval they received from the Board of Selectmen, Building Inspector, & Board of Health Director.
