January's update from the Sturbridge Senior Center
I have asked the Senior Center Director, Melissa Beauchemin, to send me periodic updates as to the goings-on at the Senior Center and the Council on Aging.  Below is her January Update!

I recently watched a webinar about emotional health.  There is a lot of research on loneliness, and all of it is horrifying. Loneliness won't just make you miserable, it will kill you.  Chronic loneliness increases your likelihood of an early death by 14 percent. Loneliness causes high blood pressure, high cholesterol. It even suppress the functioning of your immune system, making you vulnerable to all kinds of illnesses and diseases. In fact, scientists have concluded that taken together, chronic loneliness poses as significant a risk for your long term health and longevity as cigarette smoking.
We take great care of our physical bodies, but do we take the same care with our emotional self?  Make the senior center a place to help you take care of your emotional self.  Come in for coffee, stay for 15 minutes or all day.  Get involved, or just come to be with others.  We have so much to offer and everything is available to everyone, regardless of age, or residency.  We are not a building filled with old people. We are an active, ever-changing center filled with fun people of all ages with great ideas.  Add yours to the mix!
