MINUTES
BOARD OF SELECTMEN
November 30, 2005
Present at the meeting that was held at the Stow Town Hall were Chairman Edward Perry and Selectmen John Clayton, Stephen Dungan, Carole Makary, and Janet Wheeler.
Also present was Administrative Assistant Susan Flint Hosier. Town Administrator William Wrigley did not attend.
Chairman Perry called the meeting to order at 9:30 p.m. after the preceding Joint Boards meeting on the School Building Committee’s recommendations had adjourned. The agenda for the meeting was to vote on the School Building Committee’s recommendation for a new preK-5 school on new property and to discuss and potentially vote on the December 12 Special Town Meeting warrant articles.
School Building Committee Recommendation
Ms. Makary moved to approve and support the School Building Committee recommendation for a new school on new property; Ms. Wheeler seconded.
The Board discussed alternate views of the following points before voting: whether the SBC recommendation was separate from purchase of the Minute Man land; whether having all the preK-5 students at a single site was advisable; and whether proximity to the Town Center was an important factor.
The vote to approve the SBC recommendation was four in favor (Dungan, Makary, Perry and Wheeler) and one opposed (Clayton). The motion carried.
Article 1 – Modular Classroom Purchase
Ms. Makary moved to purchase a two-classroom modular unit; Ms Wheeler seconded. Following a discussion of whether the units should be leased or purchased, the motion was withdrawn pending more information.
Article 2 – Purchase of Minute Man Property
The article was not voted pending more information.
Article 5 – Purchase of Crescent Street Property
The article was not voted pending more information.
Article 4 – Improvements and Construction at Existing School Sites
The article was not voted pending more information. It was also noted that the Board does not usually vote on petition articles.
At 9:50 p.m., Ms. Makary moved to adjourn, Mr. Dungan seconded, and all voted in favor.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Flint Hosier
Administrative Assistant
