South Windsor Alliance for Families (SWAFF)
Meeting Minutes – March, 2012

Call Meeting to Order: Joann Moriarty called the Regular Meeting to order at 5:35 p.m.

Members Present: Jen Anderson; Keri Apt; Elsie Diaz; Tom Field; Sue Gerich; Joann Moriarty; Ashley Murphy; Kathy Reed; Rebecca Schroder; and Dennis Sheridan

January Meeting Minutes were reviewed and approved.

SWAFF Survey Results:
Joann shared some of the comments from the SWAFF survey that was distributed to members. She will compile the results and then the group can respond to any comments.

Drug Free Communities Grant-Enforcement Activities
A roaming patrol was provided at the RAVE held at Nomads on February 24. Two of the officers assisted with intoxicated youth. There was one arrest for the possession of marijuana.  Nomads had also hired SW police for the event.

Drug Free Communities Grant-Regional Media Campaign
ERASE will be meeting with CoLab, a marketing firm, to review the media campaign they have produced for the regional LPC’s. This campaign will then be tweaked to the satisfaction of each LPC.

SADD Update:
Kathy reported that testing has prevented the group from having some meetings. The group is working on a Prom Promise initiative. A week before the prom the students will sign a pledge card and banner saying they will be sober and safe. They will then receive a lanyard that says “Live by Choice not by Chance” and a ticket for a raffle to win a donated prize such as flowers etc.

A group of students will be attending the Annual Paws Leadership Conference on March 22.  They will also be helping SWAFF members with PAWS in the Park on Saturday May 5.

Smoking Prevention Week
The poster contest will be held the week before vacation.  The health teachers are already working with the students and all sixth graders will be creating a poster. The posters will then be narrowed down to a small number to be judged by SWAFF members. Rick Stoddard, whose wife died of lung cancer, will speak to the group.

Broken Dreams:
The program will be held on Tuesday April 24 and Wednesday April 25. The filming of the crash scene will take place, requiring a lot of effort of the community.  The Rotary still financially supports this event, but at a significant reduction, the Interact Club worked extremely hard to help with funding by raking leaves etc. to contribute approximately $3000.

Bundles of LOVE Baby Item Collection:
Tom reported that the paddy wagon and his truck were filled with items.  Money that was collected at Geissler’s and Stop and Shop was used to buy diapers. They still have several truck loads to pick up at Stop and Shop. The need is tremendous and both Joann and Tom are very grateful for all the support.

Grandparent & Grandchild Pancake Breakfast , April 18 & 19: Volunteers are always welcome!

Youth Substance Use Survey:
Dennis contacted the superintendent and along with Joann and Bonnie Smith of ERASE will be meeting with her on Tuesday, March 27.  If she agrees to this survey, ERASE will pay all costs involved.

Member Ideas/Thoughts/Feedback:
Tom announced that Chief Reed has approved the use of a 24 hour drug drop box to be placed at the police department.  A letter will now be sent to DEA for approval.  TRIAD will provide the bolts and other supplies needed for it to be secured.  The next Medication Drop Day will be Saturday April 28.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.  The next meeting is Tuesday, May 15.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy A. Aborn,
Recording Secretary
