SWAFF Meeting Minutes 01-2012
South Windsor Alliance for Families (SWAFF)
Meeting Minutes – January 17, 2012

Call Meeting to Order: Penny Hill called the Regular Meeting to order at 5:35 p.m.

Members Present: Keri Apt; Tom Field; Penny Hill; Joann Moriarty; Ashley Murphy; Kathy Reed; and Dennis Sheridan

November Meeting Minutes were reviewed and approved.

Community Events:
There are many community events planned for 2012 where prevention materials etc. could be distributed. A chart listing the event, the date, the host, the SWAFF contact person and any volunteers was created to keep track of these events. The contact person will then be responsible for any approvals that may be needed, the times of the events and any restrictions that may apply for that event.

Drug Free Communities Grant
A meeting was held at ERASE to share thoughts among other local LPC’s.  The plan is to pool funds to do a large scale media campaign. Monies from ERASE and the DFC grant would be used. This message would then be repeated from town to town. ERASE is looking to possibly use Co-Lab Marketing, the marketing firm used by other LPC’s. A work group will be formed with Somers, SW, Vernon Enfield and HAM (Hebron, Andover and Marlborough) to review how to proceed with this plan.

Enforcement Activities:
Two officers will be patrolling for four hours during February vacation. The high school calendar may offer additional opportunities for enforcement activity.

Responsible Alcohol Sales Kits:
Letters were sent to ten locations.  Ali, Sue and Kathy made a visit to each one. Ali had good results. Kathy said that tow of the three locations she visited had their stickers up etc. Most were very receptive to the program. Kathy will give Penny a list of the participants and she will send a thank you note.

SADD Activities:
Kathy reported that many students have been participating.  A program held at St. Francis Hospital titled “Let’s Not Meet by Accident” has been booked for February 2. This is an education program to encourage teens to make healthy decisions in risky situations. Another program that is being researched for a future date is a violence prevention program delivered by Officer Earl Middleton the School Resource Officer at Vernon High School.

Broken Dreams:
The program will be held on Tuesday April 24 and Wednesday April 25. Volunteers are need for food prep, feeding of the group, chaperoning, etc. The overnight will be held at the YMCA’s Camp Haven in Cheshire. Contact Joann if you are interested in helping out.

ERASE Report:
Joann announced that she has had two conversations with the superintendent regarding the school survey. The next step is for Dennis, Bonnie and         Joann to meet with her. Dennis will contact her about this meeting.

Baby Item Collection:
This will be held during the month of February. Collection boxes will be at the Community Center, The Police Department, and Town Hall. Tom will research the possibility of using Stop and Shop and Geisslers as one day collection areas. The items will then be distributed to target groups, such as the shelter Kids Safe in Enfield and the First Way Life Center in Vernon.

Meeting Format Change and Possible Survey:
After some discussion regarding meeting times etc. a decision was made to create a survey and send it to SWAFF members to get their thoughts on different items. Joann will research this.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.  The next meeting is Tuesday, March 20.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy A. Aborn,
Recording Secretary
