Patriotic Commission Minutes 06-15-2015
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
June 15, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe.  

MINUTES:
Minutes were accepted as printed on a motion by Throwe/Botteron.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Kent Carlson
  • Motion: Throwe/Asplund Move to purchase 20 wreaths for 2015 Wreaths Across America.  Carried
  • Any remaining funds from 2014-15 budget to be returned to the town.
CORRESPONDENCE:  Kent Carlson
  • Drew Guild, SW Media, has place information on how to obtain grave markers on Commission’s web page. Suggestion made that the “1-800” number also be added.
  • Grave markers (lack of them) being addressed on individual basis, as concerns arise.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • Daria to notify parents of winning essayists and winning poster contestants if student essays and pictures have not been submitted to either Roger or her for Reminder News publication.
Evening in the Park: Kent Carlson (event completed)

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Kent Carlson (for Len Glasser)
  • Event went well.
  • For 2016, SW Community Chorus will sing at ceremony with sufficient advance notice.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony
  • Flag Retirement Ceremony held.
  • Peter shared that East Hartford, Windsor, and Windsor Locks Elks held a Flag Day ceremony at VMP on June 14.
Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.  (completed; no report needed at this time)

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk   (completed; no report needed at this time)

Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Art to obtain a list of donors from Mike Blezzard, Community Foundation, so that a second mailing will not be sent to these donors.
  • Donations still needed, but Commission is close to placing granite order.
  • Site plan will be updated for precise dimensions.
Granite “gray” will be a darker shade, rather than a lighter shade of gray.
Final costs being sought, along with any lingering engineering issues.  Commission needs all costs and issues to be known.
Target date is to begin work immediately after Labor Day.
Plaques for branches of service to be priced out.
  • NE Silica donating reflective lighting for the Wall.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund  (no report needed at this time)

OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Herb still following up on disposal of American flags picked up by the Wapping Cemetery Association.  Commission has set a deadline of September 21 (date of next meeting) to have communication in place with the Wapping Cemetery Association, otherwise the Commission will go before the Town Council.
  • Flags on poles, center of South Windsor, will be discussed again as to its feasibility.
