Patriotic Commission Minutes 4/20/2015
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
April 20, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe.  

MINUTES:
Minutes were accepted as printed on a motion by Hornish/ Asplund.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Kent Carlson
  • Purchase of 288 stick flags, as well as several large USA, CT, POW flags for 2015/16 Commission and South Windsor use. Money from unexpended funds.
CORRESPONDENCE:  Kent Carlson
  • Invitation received to Policelli Awards, SW Human Services Volunteer Breakfast, and to the Town of South Windsor Board/Commission Appreciation Night.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • Members judged K-2 poster entries and essay entries.  The following entries will be awarded prizes, in order, !st , 2nd, 3rd:
  • K-2 Poster Contest: # 6, #23, # 17;
  • 3-5 Essay Contest: # 40, #46, #35;
  • 6-8 Essay Contest: # 51, # 59, # 54;
  • 9-12 Essay Contest: 3 66, # 61, # 63.
Evening in the Park: Kent Carlson
  • SW CERT team and Scout troops to be asked to assist us at Bounce Houses and Patriotic Commission booth.
  • Road Race tie-in to May 16 evening event is the morning race, sponsored by Eagle Scout candidate Sean Reed to benefit the Commission’s Wall project. SWPD, Rec Dept., and Patriotic Commission also co-sponsors.  On-line registration available at: www.plattsys.com.  Reminder News will publish the announcement and entry form. Kent will try to have registration and wall information put on website.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser
  • Bob Hornish will pick up wreaths and wreath hangers for the ceremony.
  • Need for coordination stressed so there are no gaps in parade participants.
  • Need to confirm cars for essay contest winners.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony
  • Steady donations.
Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.  (completed; no report needed at this time)

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk   (completed; no report needed at this time)

Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • More forms to be printed; money from brick fund.
  • Letters to be mailed to revised veterans list, as well as distributed to over 300 SW Chamber of Commerce members.
  • Rotary Club Golf Tournament, 5/20/15: proceeds to The Wall project. Please email both Jim and Herb if you can help at the tournament on May 20.  Members asked to attend dinner. Contact: Allan Griffin at: 860-604-4340 or allan.griffin@sbcglobal.net.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund  (no report needed at this time)

OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Willowbrook Golf benefit tabled due to Rotary Club Golf benefit
  • Cross training postponed until next meeting
  • Herb still following up on disposal of American flags picked up by the Wapping Cemetery Association.  Main Street Cemetery Association allows the Patriotic Commission to retrieve flags by a specific date. We would like that privilege extended to us at Wapping Cemetery also.
  • Billy Carroll has presented Chief Matthew Reed with a Patriotic Commission Coin.

NEW BUSINESS:
  • None at this time
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • The recent passing of Ed Hayes was noted.
  • Art Sladyk attended Hartford rally re: Governor’s proposed reduction in service representation at veterans’ funerals.
  • Art asked that applications for bronze flag holders be put on our web site.
  • Herb reported on a UTC initiative to hire veterans.
The next meeting will be held Monday, May 18, 2015, at 7:30 PM.
