Patriotic Commission Minutes 03-16-2015
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
March 16, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk.  Guests:  Sean Reed, Matthew Reed, Ken Lewis.

Motion: Glasser/Anderson: Move to suspend the meeting for two presentations:  Sean Reed, an Eagle Scout candidate, SWBS Troop 880 and by Ken Lewis of SW American Legion Post 133.  Meeting to resume following the presentations.  Carried.

Sean Reed addressed the Commission regarding his proposal to hold a 5K race, which may include a “walk” component, for the benefit of the Wall Behind the Memorial Project. Discussion ensued and the Commission expressed its gratitude and thanks to Sean.

Ken Lewis presented a check for $1000 from American Legion Post 133 to the South Windsor Patriotic Commission for the Wall Behind the Monument project. Sincere thanks were given to Mr. Lewis and the SWALP #133.

MINUTES:
Minutes were accepted as printed on a motion by Sladyk/ Hornish.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Kent Carlson
  • Contract for Bounce House entertainment made; $850 for three houses.
  • There will be no petting zoo this year, as company closed.
CORRESPONDENCE:  (None at this time)
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • 32 posters, K-2; 19 essays, grades 3-5; 11, grades 6-8; 7, grades 9-12.
  • Readers: Bob, Herb, Art: HS; Herb, Jim, Kent, grades 6-8; Daria, Len, Gene, Bill, Terri, Roger, grades 3-5.
  • PLEASE NOTE:  If a member cannot come to the April meeting, we are to give our top three rated numbers to Roger.
Evening in the Park: Kent Carlson
  • A “balloon-man” has been added as an entertainment.
  • Kettle Korn will return!
  • A booth will be available for The Wall project.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser
  • Letters to participants to be mailed this week.
  • Certificates will be given to all organizations who participate.
  • Discussion held on importance to keep “units moving,” so no large gaps in parade.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony
  • Steady donations.
Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.  (completed; no report needed at this time)

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk   (completed; no report needed at this time)

Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Approximately thirty-one thousand dollars raised to date.
  • Rotary Club Golf Tournament, 5/20/15: proceeds to The Wall project; Commission members encouraged to go to evening dinner; compliments given to Rotary
  • Another mailer to be sent to SW veterans.
  • Town website, as well as Commission website, has donation area.
  • No response back from banks and financial institutions located in SW.
  • When sufficient funds raised to cover granite cost, Art to contact NE Silica and target date can be established.
  • Jim to write history of VNP from 2002 to present for Rotary presentation.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund  (no report needed at this time)

OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Willowbrook Golf Benefit, with proceeds going to Wall project, is tabled at this time considering Rotary tournament. Target date could be spring 2016; Commission would need to be heavily involved.

NEW BUSINESS:
  • None at this time
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • VJ parade in Moosup on August 9.  Only VJ parade remaining in the United States.
  • Hartford Courant writeup on Jimmy Stanizzi on March 15.
  • A video interview of Peter Anthony will be archived in Washington, DC, as part of the WWII Veterans Oral History Project.  The video will be on CCSU website. CCSU staff and students interviewed Peter.
  • Membership on Commission discussed; possible Emeritus status, allowing for new members more easily.
  • July 10-12, Bradley Air Museum, 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.
The next meeting will be held Monday, April 13, 2015, at 7:30 PM.
