Patriotic Commission Minutes 01-12-2015
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
January 12, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bill Carroll, Teri Dickey-Gaignet, Len Glasser, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe.

MINUTES:
Minutes were accepted as printed (Asplund suggestion: Minutes will heretoforth be accepted if no corrections needed).

TREASURER’S REPORT: Kent Carlson
  • Veterans’ Memorial Wall account includes receipt of donations to date for the wall; AML check not yet deposited.
  • Costs for essay information printing: $190.
  • Budget continues to be on target.
CORRESPONDENCE:
  • Policelli Award information received and will be disseminated to members upon request.  Committee will entertain nominations for this prestigious award.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • 1700 copies of essay contest distributed to SW schools, as well as other public/private schools in area where SW are in attendance.
  • Newspaper article will be sent to area papers
  • Suggested schools to include for 2016: Kingswood Oxford and Loomis Chaffee.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson
  • Additional bounce house available; charge associated with a company monitor; committee considering this additional attraction.
  • Wall project will be on display during Evening in Park event.
  • Billy Carroll will cross train with Kent for this event, as well as working to obtain National Guard Reserve representation for this evening.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser
  • Invitations will commence next month.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  (Peter Anthony )

Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.  (completed; no report needed at this time)

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk   (completed; no report needed at this time)


Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Approximately twenty thousand dollars has been raised to date.
  • Site work contractor has been obtained who will do the work for gratis.
  • Concrete and monument contractors will need to work very closely together.
  • Granite monument will take approximately six weeks to complete.
  • Commission will prepare necessary documentation for P & Z Commission.
  • Some assistance may be received through the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Jim Throwe following up on this lead.
  • Overall costs remain close to $80,000, with granite monument at approximately $47,000; costs also associated with fill and placement.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund  (no report needed at this time)

OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Cross training (see report under Evening in the Park)
  • Herb still working on Willowbrook Golf Benefit, with proceeds going to Wall project.
  • Herb will also check into information regarding flag disposal issue at Wapping Cemetery.
NEW BUSINESS:
  • None at this time
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • July 12-14, 2015, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.  Celebratory events will be held at the Bradley Air Museum
The next meeting will be held Monday, February 9, 2015, at 7:30 PM.
