Patriotic Commission Minutes 12-15-2014
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
December 15, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe.

MINUTES:
Motion: Sladyk/Anderson:  Move to accept the minutes of November 17. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson
  • Cost of wreaths for Veterans Day will be paid.
CORRESPONDENCE:
  • Photo of Sgt. Paul Piacentini, 2008 SWHS graduate, received for Town Hall “Wall of Honor” and will be posted along with that of updates for Sgt. Cody Bowhall, who now is a Marine security guard.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • Computer issues being resolved; any member with a copy of the contest application form is asked to send it to Roger.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson (no report needed at this time)

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser (no report needed at this time)

Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony
  • Flags continue to be collected from site locations.
Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson (completed; no report needed at this time)

Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.  (completed; no report needed at this time)

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk
  • YouTube “Taking the Hill”, a CNBC set of four videos on how WAA began, recommended to members.
  • Money for 1047 wreaths collected in 2014; donations coming in for 2015.
  • 2015: State Capitol date is December 7; SW date is December 12.
  • Compliments shared on vocalist (Sandra Lee), who has been asked to return.
Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Visit made to United Bank; all banks in SW have been approached.
  • There is a possibility of a Rotary golf tournament on behalf of the Wall project.
  • Nancy Wyman has offered to speak with Art and Peter on any possible state assistance, along with Tim Larson.
  • Representative Aman supportive also.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund  (See information under Correspondence)

OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Two signs for the Wall Behind the Monument completed; more to be made.
  • Herb to contact Ann King after the holidays regarding a Willowbrook Golf Course possible benefit in the name of Glenn Folsom, with proceeds going to the Wall project.
  • Patriotic Coins will be given to Floral Expressions and Petersen’s Hardware owners.
  • Discussion of flag disposal at Wapping Cemetery to be taken up at another meeting.
 
NEW BUSINESS:
  • None at this time
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Peter shared his 11/13 visit to Rocky Hill High School for the Veterans Day Advisory Program.  He received 23 letters from students and teachers and read several to the Commission.  He will continue to share information on what veterans of the Korean War went through, how they were treated, and what a veteran “is.”
  • The on-line request for bricks form will be redone by Kent for the web.
The next meeting will be held Monday, January 12, 2014, at 7:30 PM.
