Patriotic Commission Minutes 11-15-2014
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
November 15, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk..

MINUTES:
Motion: Hornish/Anderson:  Move to accept the minutes of October 20 with editorial correction of date of next meeting. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson
  • Cost of postage/printing for wall contributions taken from brick account.
  • Early placement of bricks encouraged; forms will be made available to residents.
CORRESPONDENCE:
  • Fifty-nine contribution letters returned.
  • Letter regarding fireworks contractor issue explained.
  • Electronic wheelchair donation to be referred to Ken Lewis, Service Officer, AL.
  • Thank you received from SWPS SS Coordinator, Greg Frank.  Patriotic Coin has been presented to him; Commission to consider presenting one to all principals at an appropriate time.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • Copy of 2015 questions given to Mr. Frank.
  • In process of updating application form and documents, as well as looking for a printer (will try to remain local).
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson (no report needed at this time)

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser (no report needed at this time)

Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony
  • Flags continue to be collected from site locations.
Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson
  • Eighteen SW veterans participated in 2014 parade.  
  • TE band won best Middle School Marching Band Award.
Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson
  • Excellent ceremony; attendance down a bit from previous year.
Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.
  • TEMS: Three veterans participated; program well received; veterans honored.
  • SWHS: Approximately 12 veterans participated; ceremony/program went well.
  • Elementary Schools: Programs held in all schools. Commission will work through Mr. Frank to ensure we have representation at each elementary school next year.
  • Wreaths continue to be outstanding from Floral Expressions.  Recommendation made to award the florist a Patriotic Coin, as well as a thank you letter.  
  • Bob Hornish suggested a Patriotic Coin for Chief Reed, also
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk (December 13, 2014, 12 noon)
  • State ceremony on 12/8/14, 12 noon; Lt. Gov. Wyman to be in attendance.
  • 12/13 local ceremony: Rev. Rouse to give invocation/benediction; taps, drummer, Fire Department Honor Guard secured.
  • To date 981 wreaths ordered; goal surpassed for 2014; signage up.
  • Scouts ready to assist; Petersen’s Hardware donated 1100 spikes to locate graves.
Art to contact WC Cemetery Association to ensure that locators not disposed in any clean-up.

Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Donations coming in slowly.
  • Grants being sought from Rockville Bank, Ticket Network, Hartford Jaycees, and various other banking institutions.
  • Direct link to information about project placed on town website.
  • Signage being developed/printed. Two completed for now; more in spring.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund  (no report needed at this time)

OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Flag disposal at Wapping Cemetery needs clarification.
 
NEW BUSINESS:
  • Herb to follow-up with Willowbrook Golf Course regarding possible benefit in the name of Glenn Folsom, with proceeds going to the Wall project.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Dates of 2015 meetings reviewed.
The next meeting will be held Monday, December 15, 2014, at 7:30 PM.
