Patriotic Commission Minutes 10-20-2014
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
October 20, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk.  Jim Throwe.

MINUTES:
Motion: Hornish/Sladyk:  Move to accept the minutes of Sept. 15, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson
Deposit made on fireworks for 2015 Evening in the Park.  

CORRESPONDENCE:
  • Meeting dates for 2015 will reflect a request from the SW Town Council to meet on Mondays that do not conflict with Town Council meetings, as possible.  Kent to establish schedule.
  • Kent working on Annual report (November due date).
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
Committee discussed and chose the following 2015 poster and essay contest topics. Further, discussion was held on rotating topics every five years. Topics will be handed out at schools for a January 2-February 27 entry period.
Topics:  K-2: Create a patriotic picture in red, white, and blue
             3-5: How my family celebrates a patriotic holiday
             6-8: How I can promote patriotism
             9-12: What sacrifices I would make to preserve our freedoms.

Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson
  • Deposit on fireworks.
  • Boy scouts to help.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser (no report needed at this time)

Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony (no report needed at this time)

Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson
  • Bus leaves SW at 10:30.  
  • TE band, American Legion, and Police Department to march.
Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson
  • Guest speaker: Lt. Col. Jeffrey Lapierre.
  • Music has been arranged; Recreation Department handling chairs, sound, etc.
  • Community Center celebration on 11/10; Kent guest speaker.
Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.
  • TEMS: Friday, 11/15, same format of 2013 (speaking to 8th grade classrooms)
  • SWHS: Tuesday, 11/11, same format of 2013 (ceremony outside; speaking in classrooms)
  • Elementary Schools: Programs being held in all school
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk (December 13, 2014, 12 noon)
  • 12/8: State Capitol ceremony, 12 noon.
  • Event for South Windsor all set.
Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • We will have a table with information at the SW Business Expo, November 6, 1-7
  • Signage made that we can use at the Expo and other events
  • Kent and Art to research placing information or link on town website
  • Art to double check exact amount of money received/available to date; Gerber Scientific willing to donate, along with Carmon Funeral Home; Shea Realtors has donated and American Legion to donate again
  • Committee to address envelopes for mailings to veterans
  • Contractor being sought; Peter to investigate granite source
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund  (no report needed at this time)

OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Secretary of the Wapping Cemetery Association has stated that flags may be kept on sites from Memorial Day-Fourth of July; wreaths: until snow melts; if any issues, we will be contacted
  • Kent will follow up on exactly “how” flags are disposed.
 
NEW BUSINESS:
  • Signs for VMP: Cost of signs for the wall project will come from the VMP improvement fund
  • Kent to update “write-up” for the Patriotic Commission website
  • Terms expire for Bob, Gene, Kent, and Bill; respective Town Committees must nominate
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Bus trip trip to UCONN/Army game on 11/9; $100 pp, includes bus, ticket, refreshments
  • Veterans are guests on 11/8: Lions Club dinner at Ellington Road Fire Station (#1)
  • Bricks being place on October 21 at VMP
The next meeting will be held Monday, November 17, 2014, at 7:30 PM.
