Patriotic Commission Minutes 6/16/2014
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
June 16, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe

MINUTES:
Motion: Sladyk/Hornish:  Move to accept the minutes of May 19, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson
Budget has been nearly expended for this fiscal year. Remaining funds will be used to purchase 2014 wreaths for WAA.

CORRESPONDENCE: None at this time.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • Recognition before Town Council on June 2 discussed
  • A thank you extended to Teri, Bob, and Daria for their assistance for this program
Improvements to be sought in 2015 for parade cars in timing (all three to be together) and number of vehicles (can we get enough convertibles?)

Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson
  • Estimated 1,500 in attendance
  • More bounce houses, if possible, for 2015 and more volunteers will be needed
  • Fireworks had a spacing issue; same number of fireworks were purchased
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser
  • 2015: More help in marshaling areas needed
  • Will provide “essay contest winners” signage for marshalling in 2015
  • Flags at Wapping Cemetery need removal; recycle what we can
  • Art working on additional footmarkers from VA and is in communication with Samsel-Carmon for aid in identifying new burial sites of veterans
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony
  • Flag ceremony was June 14; Bob Moeller assisted.
  • 2015: Seek assistance from scout troops, if any troop[s] able to help
Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson
  • Awaiting 2015 invitation
Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson
  • Requests will be sent shortly to participants in the new fiscal year
Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.
  • Date for schools likely to be Tuesday, November 11
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk
  • Wreaths continue to be purchased for December 13, 2014 event
Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Letters to veterans being mailed individually, in small batches
  • Discussion held on hand addressed envelopes and decision to have all committee members address up to 100 envelopes each, with a short personal note, as applicable, on enclosed letter
  • Looking for positive public relations with the press regarding the project
  • Anticipated funding from Ticket Network, Chamber of Commerce members, Rotary, and other businesses
  • Community Foundation donation: $3,500; American Legion: $1000
  • Art to follow up on work that had been promised to be gratis
  • If members make contact with specific individuals or groups, please notify Art
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund
  • Photos returned to families of SW military men/women who no longer are serving
  • Air Force contact remains to be made
  • Wall of Honor being updated and corrected, as needed    
OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Kent will research Wapping Cemetery Association for the Commission
  • Only Wapping Cemetery flags require removal from grave sites after 30 days; other cemeteries in town do not have this requirement
            
NEW BUSINESS:
  • Cross-training among members needed to ensure continuity of Commission work, as members leave Commission and new members appointed
  • Kudos given to Kent on Memorial Day ceremony
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Be aware that scams exist regarding assistance for veterans

The next meeting will be held Monday, June 16, 2014, at 7:30 PM.
