SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
May 19, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer,  James Throwe

MINUTES:
Motion: Glasser/Hornish:  Move to accept the minutes of April 21, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson
Budget will be nearly, if not totally, expended for this fiscal year.

CORRESPONDENCE: None at this time.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • Letters sent to winners and respective schools notified.
  • Winners will ride in Memorial Day Parade and be recognized at ceremony.
  • Recognition before Town Council is June 2; Gift cards presented at that time.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson:
  • Estimated 1,500 in attendance
  • Kettle Corn a huge success; music amplification needed to be heard adequately.
  • After action thoughts/ideas are requested-send to Kent.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser
  • Speaker: Capt. Leland Zak, new speaker, Aviation, CT Army National Guard.
  • Details of parade and ceremony reviewed: Assembly begins at 9AM; Teri picking up wreaths; Bob assisting with wreaths for memorial placement;  Daria and Teri will assist with flags; Len executing parade order; Kent and Bob to set up flag holders at VMP; Bill and Len will assist with parking at VMP; and Roger and Daria will organize essay/poster winners for parade.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony—collection up-to-date; June 14 will be ceremonial burn.

Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson—event completed.
Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson—event completed.

Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.—event concluded.

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk
  • Wreath truck may stop in South Windsor, December 13, 2014.
  • State Capitol event will be December 8, 2014.
Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Letters to veterans to be mailed.
  • Information flyer will be inserted into Memorial Day program.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund—no report at this time.     

OLD BUSINESS:  
  • Signage placement for Memorial Day parade discussed.
            
NEW BUSINESS: None at this time.

ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Bob Hornish to ring bell for each name read during flag placement ceremony on Memorial Day (VMP).
The next meeting will be held Monday, June 16, 2014, at 7:30 PM.

Adjournment: 8:25, on a motion to adjourn. Motion: Botteron/Anderson.  Carried.
