SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
April 21, 2014
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
ATTENDANCE: Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk; James Throwe
MINUTES:
Motion: Sladyk/Asplund: Move to accept the minutes of March 17, as printed. Carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson
Budget continues to be on track; Printing of wall flyers came in under budget.
CORRESPONDENCE: None at this time.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
- Committee reviewed poster entries and reported out on essays.
- Poster winners, in 1st-3rd place: #s 10, 15, 3. (completed)
- Essay contest, grades 9-12, in 1st-3rd place: #s 70, 68, 71. (completed)
- Essay contest, grades 6-8, readers collectively will read: #s 50, 53, 55, 61, 63, 66. (Six essays; readers: Roger, Art)
- Essay contest, grades 3-5, readers collectively will read: #s 21, 25, 28, 30, 32, 33, 34, 36, 38, 42, 46. (11 essays; readers: Herb, Len, Gene, Kent, Daria, Peter, Bill, Teri)
- Essays will be delivered to readers and results will be emailed to Roger for tallying.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson:
- National Guard will be present.
- Signs to be posted as allowed by members in businesses/areas frequented.
- Staff vests to be ordered.
- Evening is set “to go.”
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser
- Speaker: Capt. Jeffrey Weisner, Pilot, CT Army National Guard.
- 169th Aviation Group to march.
- Flyover requested; Military Vets Corvette Club to be contacted, as will Joe Artioli for restored M37.
- Flatbed/Community Band still under determination.
- Signage discussed; will be located throughout town.
- Teri ordered wreaths; being asked to pick up wreaths and hangers for ceremony.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony: Peter Anthony—collection up-to-date.
Veterans Day Parade: Kent Carlson—event completed.
Veterans Day Ceremony: Kent Carlson—event completed.
Veterans in the Schools: Bill Carroll, Jr.—event concluded.
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk
- Wreath truck may stop in South Windsor, December 2014.
Wall Behind the Monument: Art Sladyk
- Donation request letters given to members for distribution to contacts.
- Donation letters to be mailed to approximately 1000 SW veterans.
Wall of Honor: Herb Asplund
- Visit made to Manchester recruiting station to verify names
- Updates to be made; Herb to contact families and verify veracity of info.
OLD BUSINESS:
- Wording for Memorial Day parade route signs discussed.
NEW BUSINESS:
- Main Street flags will be replaced.
- Wapping Cemetery flag issue discussed (flags being disposed improperly).
Wapping Cemetery Association president, Richard Lyman, to be contacted (Art).
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
- Marching awards discussed; no action at this time.
The next meeting will be held Monday, May 19, 2014, at 7:30 PM.
