Patriotic Commission Minutes 11/18/2013
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
November 18, 2013

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk

MINUTES:
Motion: Asplund/Carroll:  Move to accept the minutes of October 21, 2013, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson; accepted by consensus.  
O To date, budget remains on target.

CORRESPONDENCE: None for this meeting.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: (Roger Anderson):
  • 2014 Essay Contest prompts will be as follows:
  • Grades K-2 (Poster): My favorite place to see the American flag. Name the place.
  • Grades 3-5 (Essay): Discuss the importance of celebrating patriotic holidays.
  • Grades 6-8 (Essay): What it means to be a citizen of the United States.
  • Grades 9-12 (Essay): Why celebrating patriotism is important in a free society.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson-No report at this time.
               
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser
  • Investigating a WWI tank, as well as a WWI ambulance, for the parade.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony
  • Flags were retrieved from the collection bins at SWPL.
Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson
  • Great South Windsor participation.
  • TE band excellent.
Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson
  • Good turnout (60 people)
  • Two new bricks laid for John Broedner, WWII POW
Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.
  • Programs in all schools went well; SWHS program improving yearly.
  • Hanger needed for wreath for commemorative memorial at SWHS.
  • Will work with Mr. Frank, SWPS SS Dept. Chair, to ensure greater coordination for increased representation by the Patriotic Commission at each school.   
    
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk; December 14, 2013
  • Police and Fire Dept. will be represented; vocalist secured.
  • Numbers continue to increase for wreaths upwards to 900.  The hope is to have a wreath for each grave.
  • Cemetery Associations understand/accept that graves will be marked by stakes.
  • First Congregational Church, Main Street, will offer hot beverages to those laying wreaths.
  • On Dec. 9, Hall of the Flags of State Capitol, 12 noon, there will be a ceremony, also, followed by lunch at the Officers’ Club.
Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • An offer to assist in any way possible has come to us from SW Boy Scouts through a connection made by Peter Anthony.
  • Forms completed for SW Community Foundation to receive donations; we have asked that any remaining funds be given over to the brick fund.
  • Requesting a grant from the Foundation and from the town’s matching grant program, also.
  • $75,000 needed; $11,000 should be able to be raised from grants and donations from the Foundation, town, American Legion and VFW.
  • Further fundraising was discussed, which included a dinner, letters to community organizations and specific donors; work session to be held after January 1.
OLD BUSINESS:  None at this time.
(Discussion of flags for the town’s center and signs for events postponed to next meeting.)
            
NEW BUSINESS: None at this time.

ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • The plaque commemorating past member M. Terri Kyc’s service on the Commission has been completed.  One needs to be done for John Levitow.
  • Herb will work with Councilor Pendleton, our new liaison to the Patriotic Commission , on any needed issues.
  • New meeting dates for 2014 will be forthcoming.
The next meeting will be held Monday, December 16, 2013, at 7:30.
